2021 540i mpg

This is what I got from highway driving with driving assistance. A much better driver than I am for sure. Its fun to watch how the computer control the driving.

We recently took a 300 mile trip through Arizona (75 MPH speed limits) and got 36.5 MPG. About four MPG better than my similar 2018 model. I guess the mild hybrid system really does help.

I’m impressed by the fuel economy especially compared to my 2007 e90 328i MT6. The G30 540i 2WD is at least 15% more fuel economic. On our last 300-mile trip with speeds at 80mph or some times 85mph, I averaged 35.4mpg in comfort mode. That is 42.5 miles per imperial gallon or 1liter to 14.9km.

Currently on a road trip (2019 540i)...

Between San Diego & Tuscon, cruise on 81, got 33.4mpg. Between Tuscon & El Paso, cruise on 81, got 37.4. El Paso to Fredericksburg (TX), cruise on 86-87, got 32.3 (that included a bit of a headwind and slow-down, speed-up as trucks tried to pass each other). I was in Eco Pro using the ACC (which I LOVE!).

My 2017 540i would get about 35-36 on highway @ 75 mph. MY 22 550 gets about 28-29 at 75-80 mph.

I have never seen 66 mpg on my 2019 540xi but I am pleased with the mileage it gets. But I have to admit that mileage is not why I buy cars, performance is. One of my earliest cars was a '68 Hemi Roadrunner that I owned from '69 to '72. Its 426 had two four barrel carburetors with a progressive linkage. It ran on the back two barrels up to about 70 mph and delivered an impressive 13 mpg. Beyond the stops all eight barrels opened at once. If I hit a headwind mileage dropped to 8 mpg. But boy was it fun when I was running on all eight. And it helped that the recommended Sunoco 260 (104 octane) was only about 40 cents per gallon. My children and grandchildren think I am a dinosaur. --Bob

That's pretty damn good for a V8!

The best I got on my 2021 m550 was 31.5 mpg on a flat Florida highway @ 80mph cruise control for 4 hours.

Same here, but I try to balance getting on down the road with economy. Five mph over the course of the day just isn't worth it to me. I also don't have to be concerned with the speed traps. Mr. Valentine only works when the constables are using radar. I would have got nailed today by the trooper that came out of nowhere behind me had I not set the cruise at 3 (6 by the speedo) over. He wasn't using radar.

Commenters should include if their car is X-drive or not, it matters, not much but it matters.

Your right--thanks. I looked quickly. Oh well, I still like the mileagle my 540xi gets. --Bob

I. too have had a Valentine One since the late 90s in all my cars, but my way to avoid tickets is like yours, mostly using cruise control. I use it around town-set it for 36 in a 30 zone, 51 in the 45, etc. Never stopped and I often have cops coming towards me with radar on. On the Freeway I usually just stay with traffic in the left or center lane with cruise set no higher than 80. Around Chicago, 80 mph in the center lane usually means you are being pasted on both sides by faster cars. --Bob
