Paint peeling?
On the passenger side tail light, when I look in at where the tail light meets the quarter panel, I can see some white patches on the quarter panel. You have to look into that area to see it. I'm not sure if it's due to the paint peeling or just not painted fully on that area. If there is no paint, is it supposed to look white/beige?
I attached a pic of the area I'm referring to. I will try to take some pics of how it looks like.

I was able to take one of the pictures and zoom in. Here's how it looks like. You can see a little of it.

we had peeling/chipping pain on our Monaco blue 2006 325i - dealer did nothing - reported it to BMWNA - they offered nothing other than the suggestion of touchup paint - lived with it until we traded it in. The car was garage kept - low mileage.

Maybe it's compound or wax residue?
I used a business card to try to scrape part of it and it came off. It's sort of like powder or chalk. Wouldn't it had came off with a few car washes and rain? It was there since I picked the car up in July.

My car has the same thing. Well, similar. There is a clear coat drip inside the tail light area. It's actually not abnormal on cars - that's probably where the sprayer turns off when they paint the car. You can ask the dealer about it, but I am not sure there is anything they can do.

Not to disagree with Picus but I have also seen this happen to vehicles quite often. Another explanation is that after the car was painted before the paint was actually dry the lights were installed too tightly or too close to the quarter panels. When the vehicle drives down the road small vibrations happen which may cause the light to rub slightly against the paint. This can wear down already thin paint in this area and then start a peel. Check all areas around your tail lights and head lights. You might find more areas like this. Dealer will most likely try and get out of it. No one wants to repaint a car for free. Especially a new car. The only problem is if the dealer does cover it and offers to repaint the bad panels, you will then have paint that does not match the texture of the rest of the car and will also probably be thicker in that area. Perhaps giving you a problem when you trade in the car (If the check panels with a Paint Thickness Gauge.) So if it is covered and you do decide to repaint be sure you have specific warranty documentation that states your vehicle was not in an accident. Other wise you may recieve less on your trade in.

Well, being as I am oddly obsessive I spoke with a friend who used to work at the BMW VDC in NS. He said that on e90/e92s there is often a drip behind the passenger side rear tail light and under the exposed weld on the rear of the e92. He said that's where the sprayer starts and stop.
FWIW, I've had me rear tail lights out, the one on my car is a drip, not a peel. I can snap a picture up close if it'll help. |

I forgot to mention that after scraping some of the white residue off, there is paint.
