Tried to pop the bonnet with my front door closed....
....Fail.
That's terrible design or is it by design! The bonnet lever is obstructed by the door when closed! |

I know you are a tech but are you sure? I could have sworn when I had my X3 M40i that if the drivers door was closed, I could not release the hood from inside the vehicle. The lower plastic on the door blocks the handle from releasing the hood.

It's for a reason as described above because the bonet catch is purely mechanical with a pullwire. No one want's the hood to accidentaly open while driving. |

Of course I'm not stupid to pop the bonnet while driving! Happened to be sitting inside the car and the technician wanted me to pop the hood. And I kept trying like an idiot wondering if I was grabbing the right lever....only to realise later. I'm sure they designed the door bins in isolation and it became an acceptable design flaw!
As far as I remember my 3 series e90 lci - this wasn't the case! |

This is not a design flaw!
On no car I had in the past 15 years you where able to pull the lever while the door was closed. No matter if it was BMW, Audi or VW. From the picture of E90 footwells, I'm quite sure it wasn't possible on the E90 either. |
