Tyre Sealant & Compressor for Non RFT

Hi Guys & Gals,

With the problems being reported with the 19" 225M Wheels (fitted to my car), I've decided to replace my Bridgestone RFT's with Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas - for a slightly more forgiving tyre, a better ride and hopefully more time in contact with the tarmac (the RFT's skip & hop about all over the place). Details here: http://www.vredestein.com/ and video here:

Anyway - decided to buy some tyre sealant and a compressor and have decided to go with the Continental ContiComfortKit (bit of a mouth full). The unit includes a compressor (which runs off the cigarette lighter), built in pressure guage and cannister of sealant.

Details here with demo: http://www.conticomfortkit.co.uk/ and is available to buy here: http://www.care4car.com/productdispl...alant_Kit.html

Price is £59.99 incl Free Delivery (which is less than the BMW M Mobility Kit which is £75). Extra cannisters are £18.99 and I believe the shelf life of the cannisters is 4 years.

You wont regret your choice of tyre! I had them fitted to my z4 coupe (235/35front and 263/30Rear)

Brilliant tyre, good grip, nice and quiet, good in the wet, good wear rate and nicely priced as well!

Their website only appears to show 19" tyres for the front, where are the back wheel sizes?

It's a choice yo wont regret, I ditched the run flats on my Z4 after a couploe of months, with my e92 I picked it up friday night and switched to normal tyres satruday morning. The ride is so much better with less tyre noise.

Once this sealant is used on a puncture can it be removed so the tyre can be repaired?

You might struggle to find a tyre repair place who'll want to attempt a repair IMO.

I've heard balance can be a problem if the sealant doesn't get distributed evenly

Wow,

Are we all moving from RFT's then - damn, should have negotiated a group-buy discount

Married Blonde: Thanks for the feedback - I did a fair amount of research and all the tech spec and 3rd party reports pointed to these being good tyres, as opposed to just cheap tyres but it's very good to hear of your positive experience with them. I've driven most tyre brands but never Vredesteins before.

In addition to the concern over the alloys and harsh ride, the car is going in to Ant at SR for a bunch of mods next week and I was convinced the handling of the stock RFT's was not going to be up to coping with the extra engine torque or the increased braking forces from the BBK - well, not comfortably and with enough safety margin anyway.

FWIW: I also looked at Michelin PS2, Goodyear F1 Asymmetric, Continental Sport Contact 3, Toyo T1R and Hankook Ventus Evo.

Creepy Coupe/AlanQS/Xenon: Best place I've found is Camskill (as MB said) - I believe they order them in from Vredestein. Although they list a 225/35 R19 they don't appear to do a 255/30 R19, so I'm going for 'Plus One' sizing on mine and have ordered 235/35 R19 front and 265/30 R19 rear at a total cost of £600. http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m4b758s0p0

The change in rolling radius on these sizes is only 1%, which is well within tolerance for a Plus One step.

Willhollin: Not sure about the tyre goo in this kit but I've never been keen to drive on repaired tyres anyway so to be honest at this price (£140ea front and £160ea rear) if a tyre got holed then I'd just get it replaced (stock permitting).

I hadn;t either and took a shot at them. Evo did a tyre test on them and they came second behind my favourite tyre (Goodyear f1's) and the Us forums raved about them so thought i would give them a shot. I drive a lot of miles so worse case scenario I would have to live with them for a 6 months max.

The plus one sizing suits the car perfectly. I swapped from the optional 19"'s fitted to my coupe to the very same setup. Very nice to drive and chuck around the bends!

Thanks Mark & MB, I priced some 18's for my 1er and they came to £490, then I suppose a few quid to get them fitted, not bad at all IMO.

J (M.B): Thanks - what did you do regarding tyre pressures - I'm assuming you increased them to compensate for the softer composition of the sidewall compared to the RFT?

Standard pressures (single occupant) on the RFT's are 2.4 bar (34psi) Front and 2.6 bar (37psi) Rear - I was thinking of trying 2.6 bar (37psi) Front and 2.75 bar (40psi) Rear to begin with on the Vredesteins. What do you use?

Creepy Coupe: As you say, compared to others they look very good value for money and their UTQG treadwear rating is 280. Before anyone says, I know the UTQG is only a guide but when the Bridegstone RFT's are only given a 140 rating (40% above baseline) then anything else should wear better.

I played around with the pressures quite a bit (must look like a donkey to my neighbours...) I went with 4psi over the RFT's and came down to 2psi over at the back and 3psi over at the front. This has given the best compromise between harshness and grip (IMHO of course!)

Still tempeted to go with the Falkens, haven't heard many bad words said about them over on BMWland. Plus a full set for my 18" come in a £100 quid cheaper than the Vredestein tyres.

Mark II did you consider the Falkens??

Falkens are great on the Porsche but a somewhat different size. Most reactions are positive to them though.

Yes, I looked at the Falkens as well, but they didn't float my boat (so to speak) and the feedback suggested that for a little more money the Vredesteins would perform better, so that's why I went with them.

Hi Will,

Nothing to report yet: I'm having some more modifications fitted at the moment, so I've yet to drive the car with the new tyres on.

I understand from J (Married Blonde) that the Vredesteins take a little while to scrub in (about 50 miles) before which they are about as slippery as greased eel but after that they grip really well.

I'll let you know as soon as I have the car back and have put a few miles on her
