overheating warning HELP

Hi, i drive an e90 n55.
One night i was driving home and my amber engine too hot warning came on, 1 sec later, the red one comes on and i coudlnt accelerate. I checked the temp gauge and it was at 240 degrees F
I pulled over and turned off the car and turned it back on and it disappeared. It also drove just fine and it didnt come back on for the rest of the night.

The next day, i checked for leaks none, checked coolant level, full.

I was thinking it might be a sign of the water pump going bad or a thermostat.

Is there any other things i should check before i commit to changing out waterpump/thermostat?

can it be something a lot smaller? It hasnt thrown any codes either so im kinda stunned.

also the bimmer only has 70k miles on it

what if its not throwing a service soon light? would an obd sensor still see it?

Op: Exactly what my car did at 38k miles.

No error codes issued.

A week later the pump went out fully during a long drive out of state.

Change your water pump. Overheating issues don't just go away.

While you are there replace the thermostat.

If you don't want to replace the thermostat, you will need to verify the pump is the issue by opening it up. The pumps are not designed to be opened. You will end up breaking the 3 phase terminal to the stator windings, but at least you can inspect the plastic and see if its peeling off.

yea, i found a kit with thermo and waterpump with pipes. Just wanted to make sure its not anything small like loose pipes.

Funny how they made such a high tech pump and screw up on the type of plastic used.

Also check your error codes via obd and see if other people getting same codes when pump is failing.

But then again, if pump hasn't been changed since new, it now should be.
