de·riv·a·tive [di-riv-uh-tiv] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective
1. derived.
2. not original; secondary.
–noun
3. something derived.
4. Also called derived form. Grammar. a form that has undergone derivation from another, as atomic from atom.
5. Chemistry. a substance or compound obtained from, or regarded as derived from, another substance or compound.
6. Also called differential quotient; especially British, differential coefficient. Mathematics. the limit of the ratio of the increment of a function to the increment of a variable in it, as the latter tends to 0; the instantaneous change of one quantity with respect to another, as velocity, which is the instantaneous change of distance with respect to time. Compare first derivative, second derivative.
7. a financial contract whose value derives from the value of underlying stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities, etc.
[Origin: 1400–50; late ME derivatif < LL dérīvātīvus, equiv. to L dérīvāt(us) (see derivation) + -īvus -ive]

—Related forms
de·riv·a·tive·ly, adverb
de·riv·a·tive·ness, noun

A prime example is how Ford made the Ford Fusion, then changed some items to also create the Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ. This is often called platform sharing. It's a way to amortize costs across many product lines to increase profit margins. It usually means that a customer pays more for a brand name despite the product being based upon something 'cheaper'. Some automobile manufacturers do provide enough differentiation to their products to make it worth while.

I used to have an '04 Acura TL. This car was built side-by-side with the Honda Accord in Ohio. The Acura was a sedan that had a larger engine, a 6-speed stick, and an LSD, all of which weren't available on the Accord.

3 - 1 = 2

Conclusion, BMW will most likely come out with a 2 series

or

3 + 1 = 4

Conclusion, BMW will most likely come out with a 4 series

Actually, the derivative of a constant is 0.

Therefore, d/dx of the 3 series shall be the 0 series! (ie. d/dx 3 = 0)

Nerd

and by derivative of a 3er they mean vans or hatchbacks or any other type of vehicle based on the 3 series chassis.

i think the e90-3 is enough. we don't need anything else clogging up the bloodline... x3 is already an embarassment

Uh... what the hell? I thought the 1-series was the derivative of the 3-series. I mean, 1-series comes as a coupe, cabriolet, and sport hatch, and the 3-series comes as a saloon, coupe, sport wagon, and cabriolet. The X-series pretty much covers all the SUV variants. About the only thing missing is a minivan....

...Oh dear God, please no....
