I have a 30d F15 X5 and a F34 335d

The mrs drives the X5 but when I get a chance to drive it lately I like the F15 X5 better because compared to my car

1. Comfortable high sitting position
2. Getting in and out is easier
3. Lower road noise
4. Relatively silent suspension
5. Handles broken roads better.
6.Optional 7 seats

So Im thinking of changing out of the F34

So a 3 year old F15 M50d and 1 year old G01 X3 m40d/m40i are about 35-40k each
I will not buy a G05 X5 as hate the grill and back and looks. The G01 looks nice and proportional

I am not into into software and things like apple and android carplay autonomous driving auto park etc don't interest me.

To put you into the picture current online part x values for the 335d are 9k less than what i bought it for used 15 months ago so next purchase i want to keep for 3 years at least!

Any thoughts or am i a lost cause.

X3 M40i

Nearly as good as an X3M. Apparently.

+1 for M40i with adaptive suspension to meet your wish list.

Others will be along in a minute to cast their vote for X3M.

PS, it’s a Glasgow thing to get a M40!

I sold my F15 M50d at the end of January. It was 30 months old with 32k miles and never missed a beat. The engine has loads of torque and an impressive turn of pace. To be fair I only ever drove it in D and comfort settings very very occasionally using sport mode and the paddles. It averaged just shy of 31 mpg in the time I had it.

I’ve since got a FFRR that is much more comfortable and a little more luxurious but the engine is nowhere near as good

Given what seems important to you, an X5, probably an MSport, maybe a 40d.

Not sure the M50d is worth the extra money....

Depends what you want, if you want an SUV that almost handles like a car then the X3, if you want more space and comfort then the X5.

But I'd say the G05, it's a great looking car in person.

In the current environment I wouldn’t be changing cars. I’d just ask the Mrs if I could drive the current X5 more. But that’s our circumstances where we’re not using our cars much. If you’re both still using yours a lot then maybe not such a bad idea to change.

The main issue right now is selling your car is almost impossible, but purchase prices haven’t softened much yet as dealers are hoping it’s just a blip, or are closed and not much point in altering pricing.

And if circumstances were normal........... We’ve now got two SUV’s on the drive and decided it’s a mistake. Seems a bit unnecessary in the end and nice to have a bit of variety. How about when things are back to normal swapping the F34 for a 4 seat convertible? Maybe that would encourage your wife out of the SUV more and allow you to drive it?

Only going on personal experience and what I’d do because don’t really know anything else about your personal circumstances.

This is just my view as I recently considered X5 or X3.

Had a new X3 3.0d for 4 days while my F31 was in for some stuff and while it was good it just felt like a halfway house, bit like a bigger F31 on stilts. The 3.0d was OK but 4.0i or d would have been much better, was a bit small for me if looking as I was for something with space.

Then had a F15 X5 for a day, much bigger car & felt like a real 4x4 for size but the 3.0d was a bit sluggish. F15 felt far nicer than the X3 IMO, smoother, quieter and a lot more space, especially seats down, ability to get in laws wheelchair in the back and still have some space without dropping seats.

Looked at the new X5 and just far too big and £££ for me.

My thought was that if I were to have the choice I would opt for a good F15 either 4.0d or M50, if you're having a 4x4 then get a proper size one.

In saying all that some time ago I sold a 350bhp Impreza and bought a Porsche Cayenne as I wanted a 4x4 with some umph and ability to chuck it round, got quickly bored with that after 2 months, felt the need to be sitting in a car not on it if you get the drift, along with other things, but it would have been good to have both. seems you have and seems a good idea.

Why did you make the change to the FFRR. Did the reliability stories worry you. Have you had any problems with it.Why did you choose it over RRS.

Its probably personal preference but whenever I see them the front end just screams nooo to me. The sides are softened compared to the F15 back looks bulky but ok.

plenty of interesting points, both of us are keyworkers and paradoxically driving more nowadays.Mrs has over past 5 years kept on saying 'I love my X5' and it seems either her or the car will have to go before they can be separated. I ferry 3 kids to nursery/school hence went with the f34 than an 3/4 series.
The online part ex prices are shocking and private sale is not possible due to lockdown and even if it was we cant be without a car each so overall stuck.

I'd strongly advise waiting the current circumstances out, given the likelihood that it will negatively exacerbate your cost to change. Doesn't sound like the things you prefer about the X5 are life-altering over the 3GT.

Then, when the time comes, I'd go for the X3 M40i. At least you have slightly different cars, and I happen to think the X3 M40i is a rare bit of handsome design among BMW's recent efforts. The base X3 is handsome and the M40i add-ons suit it (possibly more than the full M version). It's also just a cracking engine which is more economical than you'd credit.

Where are you getting an online part ex price from? WBAC seems to be in data harvest mode - asking all of the details and then refusing to quote.

As WBAC is a front end for BCA and there are no physical auctions at the moment, I'm not surprised they're not buying cars in tbh.

I'm not surprised that they're not buying either, but I don't think it's reasonable to make you input all of you car's details and your details before they tell you that.

Absolutely not, but then again it seems in keeping with my experiences of BCA!! They'll probably spam the hell out of people once things start moving!

It was a number of things really. I’ve run 15 successive BMWs of one sort or another and I just didn’t fancy anything in the current lineup. Since retiring nearly 3 years ago and having a couple of sports cars alongside the beemers I just wasn’t using them. We spend a lot of time in Spain and drive over with our 2 dogs so a comfortable SUV suits us and our lifestyle.

It would be wrong to say I wasn’t aware of the JLR horror stories but equally I know of people who’ve run them without issue. I’m not sure I would without manufacturers warranty.

I drove the FFRR first and then the sport. The former felt like a step up whereas the sport was similar to the F15.

I’ve had no issues yet (long may that continue) but like most not done much mileage over the past 7 weeks

I've had these two.
F15 m50D & X3 M40D (not the i of course)

For me by far the better car was the X3. Unless you really really need the space there is more get up and go and refinement in the X3. It's actually not far off an X5 for size but is quite a bit lighter.

Then again that split tailgate is nice. If it was me picking again and had to the your choice I'd have the X3 M40i.

If those are key words; test drive the JLR cars before deciding on either X3 or X5. Not sure what test drive policy is like with your local dealers, but down here I had five days in two RRS back to back and two days in a Disco, before deciding what to buy.
