F30 Trunk Taillight Broke and is loose - Should I replace the whole thing?
If you look at the picture, the part I marked that holds the taillight in broke. Picture is from an ebay listing. I am afraid that taillight will fall off when I am on the road. Can I fix this or do I have to replace the whole part?

You might be able to get away with just the bolt & nut but I wouldn't play my luck tbh (that's just me). It's a simple part to replace. I do have a set of my old tail lights if you'd like to buy them, that or you could always upgrade to depos
A quick test is to try going to the side where that clip is and try pulling the tail light from that side. If it pops out i'd 100% replace it. If not you're in the clear. |

I wouldn't personally risk it considering how cheaply you can probably find that part on eBay. I also don't think something like 3M automotive double sided tape would suffice (that super strong grey stuff). However, it's unlikely to fall off your car completely and become a hazard. That's the part you want to worry about the most; driving down the freeway and causing an accident behind you as it flings up into someone else's windshield.
As I remember when I replaced that part on my car, it's only held in by the two ends, one of which you broke. So it's only held in one place and could easily fall out. However, the wiring harness would probably prevent it from falling off of your car. The reason I don't think double sided adhesive will work is because there may not be a good flat area you could apply it to the trunk lid. Last edited by upsidedownfunnel; 05-03-2020 at 01:31 AM.. |

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/vhb-tapes-us/ You can find it on Amazon. I had an emblem fall off my previous car (Lexus LS430) and I used it. It held up for several years even in -20 deg C weather. I would give that a try before buying another (possibly costly) part. Can you show us a photo of the surface that you'd stick it to? The flatter the better. |

I don't see why double sided tape wouldn't work. Again one end is held in by a screw. Not to mention how lite the light is itself. Even BMW uses double sided tape for aerodynamic parts such as the M performance trunk spoiler I have. When applied properly, it will be strong enough. But of course the part may be cheap enough on eBay that you could just buy a new one.

I'd try the tape & if you're comfortable with how it feels give it a test run. |

Personally in a similar situation I always try to find a second hand part in good condition. Most fixes will not either align as they should or will come loose after a while.

Not sure what's behind that, but you probably need a watertight seal, whatever you do.
I'm not sure what I would do, but I'd consider just a bead of silicone caulk on its cleaned up gasket. Also, not sure what's behind, but maybe also drilling a hole in the leftover piece of tab and see if there's a path to get a ziptie through in the lid.

There is a SIB for that. The part was redesigned at some point with stronger tabs. You can secure it (tape,ib weld, high temp black silicon etc) to the trunk lid in many ways but you are always running the possibility of it detaching when slamming the trunk lid. Also, should you need to remove it again, jb weld or tape might prove less than perfect solution.
In my case, I had to adjust the trunk lid closing distance because initially the lid needed to be slammed to latch. I also had both inner side tail lamps replaced under warranty. The link below is for inner tail light you can use for reference. Hope that helps. https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...JjaCBSZXN1bHRz This one is all taillights for 328i 2013: https://www.getbmwparts.com/search?s..._id=&page_url= |

Thank you all for the replies. I will try tape for a month. I am also looking for a part on eBay. Eventually I will replace it. Here is a picture of the broken part.

Hope you find a suitable replacement soon. You might want to verify its the newest part number because the previous version is bound to break again due to weak tabs.
