Spoiler install: best tape position?
I have seen a number of install videos and posts. But does anyone have any pics to use as a guide on where the best place is to install the tape on the spoiler is? Ideally for an F33.
A couple of close ups of where OEM or other high-quality 3rd party spoiler manufacturers have positioned the tape would be helpful. Thanks!

While we are in on the topic....
Does anyone know the proper thickness of tape that should be used? Im installing an F80 spoiler soon and was wondering what mm thickness the factory would have used to originally apply it. |

We will see soon enough...in just clean an OEM F36 spoiler. It does have a lip on it where the tape is... I'm also worried, but the tape that was there originally is not thick either. I don't see any other tape thicker than 45 mil. Maybe non 3m tape.... but I have a few disappointment using those. Last edited by Gen13 F36; 05-03-2020 at 10:19 AM.. |

Like the homies said, "it's all in the prep."
I highly recommend purchasing 3M adhesion promotor specifically meant for their acrylic foam tapes. Don't use the clear VHB tape. You want the gray acrylic foam tape as these are incredibly strong once stuck down in place. Definitely figure out what correct mil (thickness) you need for attaching your spoiler. One last tip, once you have the 3M tape affixed to the spoiler undo about an inch or so of the liner from the ends, just enough for you to pull away. The purpose of this is to give one the ability to 'dry' mount for a precise fit with the tape in place. Once you are happy with the location, hold the spoiler in place and pull away the double-sided tape liner for a perfect fit. You basically have one shot to get it right so this would prevent any curse words or objects from flying. I learned this pro-tip from the official BMW mudflap install instructions.

There are a few 62mil thicknesses available and lots of automotive specific products for badge application. 3M 5962 would be a good option if you ever plan to remove it and keep the lip intact. 3M CV62F is a commercial vehicle tape that would be more permanent.

Be sure you get the original 3m double-sided tape in the original 3m package since the imitation tape does not last and falls apart in the heat.
This is the original 3m tape I got for my spoiler and other trims. This bonds really well and have had no issues. https://amzn.to/2SLn2Nt Last edited by jcortez75; 05-08-2020 at 09:04 AM.. |

Per the OPs question - heres some pics of the M Performance front splitter for the 4-series M Sport as it ships. It’s an amazing piece — the finish, weight and fab precision are aerospace quality.
Each side of the splitter only has 4 pre-installed automotive tapes - with the very useful ‘flag ends’ on each one to facilitate easy removal of the tape backing once the splitter is located in place during installation. It’s unmarked tape (no 3M branding) and it’s actually thinner than the standard 3M foam tape. (BMW can likely go thinner due to above mentioned fab precision as everything is exact dimensionally and surface-wise.) As you can see, BMW has the tapes installed just in critical additional spots, complementary to the splitter’s built-in structural mechanical fastening locations which match up to the cars bumper/underbody points. They apply the tape approx. 3/8” to 1/2“ from the part edges. Hope this is useful! .

I guess for some reason alot of people call the front lip as a spoiler. Front lip aka splitter... aka spoiler... aka air dam.. so much damn names. So not to confuse .m.i said trunk spoiler |

Since the OP said he had an F33 vert I assumed he meant front vs rear ‘spoiler’. I didn’t think there was an OEM F33 rear ‘spoiler’. ??
I don’t disagree that you’d want tape near the edges on a rear ‘spoiler’ that’s hanging off your rear deck having no mechanical attachment.

Now I recently bought Betalink to do the job permanently and not waste another 2-3 hours removing and clearing the spoiler in case the edges don't stick perfectly. Then I started reading some threads mentioning Betalink a nightmare to work with so I don't know what to do. If anyone wants OEM CF M Perf spoiler and Betalink let me know Or maybe I'll just do it |

Betalink is supposed to be permanent, he shouldn't have removed it. Is it OEM M Perf CF Spoiler? It's a bit tricky on the edges.

It was the OEM M Perf spoiler. If you betalink, i'd expect to be happy with how you place it and never expect that shit to ever come off. Strong stuff.
