B58 engine whine update

Hello everyone,

I just got a call from the dealership and they told me that the transmission on my '17 440i is getting replaced. I know that a lot of us is complaining that the vehicle is whining and I finally got the BMW to acknowledge the issue.

Just wanted let everyone know who is affected by this problem. The only thing is that I had filed a complaint with a Lemon Law attorney and my vehicle has 49k miles it is still under factory warranty. Sterling BMW in Newport Beach is dealing with my vehicle now. I had tried every dealership around me since I bought the vehicle.

My phone did not pick up the sound of it. They said they recorded what they could and sent it over to Germany.

To be honest I always thought it was the alternator. At least they found something...

Something about the torque converter. All fixed now. I haven't driven it much, though.

For those asking about this...it sounds just like a bad power steering pump sound. I had the same issue and I thought it was related to power steering. They told me that the transmission was missing fluid. They filled it up, checked for leaks and sent me on my way. Im keeping an eye out on things but so far no issues. Its been a month since that happened

KeelTiii, can you share more information about the build date of your vehicle and where it was built?

I have 2017 440i GC (slightly different vehicle) built in Dingolfing.

I would be grateful for a copy of the repair invoice - minus personal information.

My work order says they checked the fluid and also checked for metal shavings but none found. So far I have heard no whining. We will see what happens from here on...

You are awesome! Many thanks.

My car was built on July 15, 2016. It's possible that the same production batch of transmissions was used for my vehicle. Which factory built your car?

Whining sound that occurs around 2k rpms and intensifies along as rpm increases. Between 2nd and 4th gears more noticeable. Vehicle still pulled strong. When I first bought it the noise was accompanied by a rattling sound which was caused by a bad drive belt tensioner. I got it replaced under warranty but whining still persisted.

Did it whine in neutral and park as well or just drive gears?
