**UPDATE**
The shavings were leftover material from the break in period when the car was new. Once the drain plug was cleaned, the shavings never returned. So I just did an oil change on my 2015 335i (42k miles) the first with a magnetic plug. The oil doesn't have a ton of miles (3k ish). Car has been in storage since mid 2019 though so it isn't exactly fresh. For background info the car has recently gone FBO (down pipe, charge pipe, intercooler, intake, BM3 stage 2 tune). Anyways I found these fine metal shavings on the plug. Wondering if this amount is normal in any way shape or form? Just curious if anyone had any guesses in the meantime Last edited by pynacl; 07-27-2021 at 07:50 PM.. |

I honestly wouldn't worry. you never get 100% of oil out on a change. Those particles could of been in the sump since initial break in and only now the magnet has pulled them to point you can see.
wait and see what Blackstone say . are there any particles in the pleats of your oil filter? |

See I wasn't sure. I figured if that happened every 5k miles that would be a ton of metal missing from god knows where, no?? Hopefully it's just old flakes from the original break in period floating around and just hadn't been caught by a magnetic plug yet. I'll update this post when I find out what it is

On your next oil change, use Liqui Moly Engine Flush.
It'll turn your old oil to the consistency of water, allowing a lot more to easily drain out.

Sorry for the late reply! Yes I did cut into it tonight. I wasn't able to find any metal flakes, thank god. The shiny looking bit in the photo is some air bubbles hitting the lights weird. I actually went spline by spline to make sure there weren't any tiny pieces. I'll keep this thread updated once I get my Blackstone results.
