Happy birthday e90 platform

E90 platform was introduced in March 2005 for MY2006 with the sedan and wagon body styles.

This year it celebrates 15 years.

Why to make you feel old, ha?

My E93 cabrio still looks modern. A non car guy would never guess how old the design is.

I just picked up an 06 330i (06/05 build). It is the 3rd 06 I have owned. I sold my original 330i in 2015 with 130k miles. This one has 100k miles and my soon to be 16-year-old son is excited about making it as nice as his sisters fully restored 325i.

There a few cars that do have such effect. e92/e93 line to me looks timeless (much better looking than 4 series).

Looks to be in great shape. Curious to what color interior. Have the same, Alpine White with the Terra Cotta interior and 162's. Don't see many in this combo

Got mine Dec. 2006 and no regrets. Read on if you want my take on E92 ownership.

This car turned heads from 9/05 to likely the end of 2007. Not a misprint, not an exaggeration.

Not everyone remembers its history. I had my heart set on the Infiniti G35S 6 manual sedan. Carried the review with me on a business trip in 9/06 to Ft. Lauderdale. My colleage at the time said you're joking, you brought that article? lol

We were on the A1A, and there she was. A 335i E93. WTF? That car is out?

Got home, test drive a E92 335i, at the time, none were available nationwide for sale, they were sold off dealer allocations. Loved it, but at the end of the day, this car at list was about $10k more than an infiniti. I'm not gonna spend $10k more for an unreliable German car.

Dealer calls after the weekend, do you want an allocation, list price, maybe I can do $500 off. Nah, I would need $1800 off (the best on this forum at the time, it was 10/06). No way I can do that, most are paying list. that's fine I don't need the car. 2 days later we can do it come in an put a $500 refundable cc deposit please.

Flash forward 13.5 years. Nothing broke on the car except the ABS/DSC, and two vanos jobs. Good thing I spent $8100 more for the unreliable German car. Would do it all over again!

p.s. in retrospect it was funny the 325/328 less so 330 v. 335i wars. They're meaningless today, all the E9x's are sweet cars.

edit p.p.s. I was at the E90 launch probably around spring 2005 in Phila. A salesperson I've never met invited me. there were ooohs and ahhhhs when the covers were removed, both a 325 and 330 sedan. When I finally went to test drive? The saleswoman said, "Oh you're Troy's customer." I said well I've never met him, and you seem hot. So she backspaced over his name and put hers in its place. In 2009, she said to me, "I never pictured you as a 7 (series) guy." Another story for another time....

I'm astounded how good the e9x interior still looks. I have the sport/saddle brown/Nav with aluminum trim and it still looks like a new car. Even if I look back one gen I go ugh and I see nothing better looking at the F series.

Last summer as I was getting into my E93 in a parking lot a lady came up to me commenting on how beautiful my car was and literally asked me if it was a brand new car. I thanked her, but had to tell her "No ma'am, this car is ten years old, lol"

Thanks. Yours truly is a rare interior. Both of mine are the super common Alpine White / Dakota Beige.

I remember when a lady that worked in the same building I did rolled up in her new 2006 and I didnt know what to think. I loved the E46 a lot. Now that I've owed one, it's the best 3'r of them all imo

I test drove a new wagon when they were still being imported and was wholly unimpressed. Interior actually felt like a step back in material qualities (mind you this is after I replaced the soft-touch stuff that starts to peel), the 4 banger was def buzzy compared to my I6 and the steering felt vague on center.

Was happy to get back into my old car. It was a trigger moment, im doing what it takes to keep her reliable and "fresh." That even includes proactively replacing parts. Its still considerably cheaper than a car payment.

Have you ever get the back end to come around on corners, drifted, hardcore oversteered, do donuts, and slide it around corners for fun in your e90?

Same here. I was debating getting e46 coupe or e92. Ended up with e92. No regrets. I drove numerous f3x to see if they can spark the same excitement, but no.

Have you driven the new G series? BMW got it right. It might be a good replacement for e9X.

Was the review from (I think) Car and Driver? I think they had a comparison test between 335 and G at the time and they declared G clear winner. My buddy was in the same position as you. We had numerous arguments BMW vs Infinity, but him being numbers guys, he chose G37s as soon as the car became available. I got e92. For how much he claims he is a "car guy" I have never heard him say anything how exiting it was for him to drive his car. He used to mention how car accelerated of the line, but was about it. Driving his and my car back to back, to me e92 is much better driver's car - it invokes almost all senses (esp in manual version).
Did you ever end up driving G?

You might be thinking of Motor Trend and that came later with a G37S coupe. The 335i overheated and Motor Trend was overjoyed and proclaimed, "The King is Dead."

With my car, Automobile pulled a holy **** this thing did 340 HP at the wheels (I think). BMW is saying 300/300 so as usual either this is a preproduction tune or as typical they underrate their products (then). And you have to remember it was shocking BMW was doing a twin turbo. 330i owners were irate they just got their cars < 12 mos. ago.

C&D drank BMWs kool-aid for 23 consecutive years, almost as many times the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. Going into the F was a lie so they finally had to remove the 3 series from the 10 Best list, and to my knowledge, it never was put back on.

It begs the question: Is the Honda Accord really that good, or do they have to wait like they did with BMW to remove it

yes I autocrossed the G 330 when it first came out and was underwhelmed. The cars were 4 cyl. and listed for 58k.

back in fall 2005 BMW had this event called the ultimate driving event (have a polo to prove it lol). They brought along a Audi A4 (FWD of course) and Infiniti G35 coupe (not the 2006 the older one), everybody drove the other two first before getting into the 330. Then they had E90 330's with ZSP.

One of the instructors told me tires are replaced every 50 miles.

I said you mean 5000? He said, no, "fifty, as in five zero."

At the end of the event the instructors did a hot lap. Not only was I scared (yes I was wearing a skirt that day lol), I was amazed what capabilities a 330i sedan had.

Folks, this was a great car and when BMW shined. They didn't do fake. No fake dual exhausts back then, only true. They even had true duals and then it exited on the same side to be one, not two (7 series).

I love seeing all of these happy 2006 owners. They definitely got it right with these cars, couldn't be happier with my 330i despite being 14 years and 100,000mi old!

In the events of the past few months, it's become my new favorite form of social distancing.
