2020 BMW X3 Transmission Issue? - HELP!
Hello,
The 2020 BMW x3 (base model) is my first BMW and the issue im experiencing is the following: - when coming to a stop, the tranny downshifts every single gear before coming to gear 1. This causes unpleasant jerks as the tranny shifts down every gear. It happens regardless of what mode i put it in, ive tried all modes and individual settings and put the trannny in ‘comfort mode. Upshifting is fine. - Its almost as if its stuck in sport mode since all the past cars ive owned showed such behaviour in sport mode ONLY. Otherwise the car would go from gear 6 to 2 to 1 as i come to a stop. - is this a bmw thing? Why is the tranny downshifting every gear? Same behaviour whether the car is cold or hot. |

To be honest the gearbox (M40d) is so smooth I don't even notice, certainly no jerking, changes are definitely more noticeable/forcefull in the sports modes, Maybe yours needs checking out.?

Any chance you've got the transmission in manual mode?

I get smooth downshifts, feels (sounds) a bit sporty even in comfort. Not at all jerky.

Could be a faulty ECM. Better take it in. You shouldn't feel it jerk while up or down shifting in normal driving.

You are right.
It down shifts at every single level and the deceleration from the engine will have a sudden change makes it uncomfortable when braking to stop. I had to adjust my brake padal force very carefully to counteract this. Especailly at 4 to 3 and 3 to 2 gear, it would feel as if the driver is braking 50% harder But somehow I like this feature. It makes the car more sporty and it's certainly because the tranny is almost always coupled non-slipperily. |

I have an M40i and no, it doesn't unless I have it in sport mode and even then, it's not as bad as what you describe. In comfort mode, the 8 speed transmission shift points are almost imperceptible at downshift.

Are you sure.? In comfort and auto tranny mode, the exact gear won't be shown on the dash, you have to watch the revolution blip to know when it actually downshifts.

That's what imperceptable means. In comfort mode you can't really notice downshift points when slowing down.

It's a BMW thing.
What is your previous vehicle? |

I had this EXACT issue within 24 hours of picking up my 2014 5 series touring. Went straight back to the dealer where it was booked in for diagnoses, new gearbox fitted under warranty. I’d get it booked into your dealer straight away, on the way to drop it off the car stalled at a roundabout and went into limp mode. Luckily the dealer was only a couple of hundred metres away so managed to limp back there. |
