Control unit AHK 71606856980 What does it do?

Control unit AHK - 71606856980 Does anyone know what its function is? is it needed?

My car is in at a BMW specialist and he is having trouble coding my retrofitted tow bar (its the electric swivel one)

I bought all brand new modules and wiring loom and a 2nd hand tow bar.

71606889589 - Control unit for trailer hitch - He can communicate with it but the measure plan says to replace it? He thinks its an older version but its the latest number on realoem. He used the same software bmw use, its all connected fine and passes the diagnostics test but comes up with a coding fault (as youd expect until its coded to the car) When he selects retrofit and it creates a measure plan it doesnt like the unit.

71606889589 - Control unit for trailer hitch is the latest unit as he thought it might be an old version

(real oem calls for- Control unit for trailer hitch AAG-01 1 03/2014 - 71606884357) But thats been superseeded buy the number ending in 589

Any help would be a massive help. reluctant to put it into bmw and for them to tell me the same and charge me more

I do not now know which part number your car has now installed since you mentioned 3 different ones.
Unfortunately I don't know exactly which car you drive either.
The 71606856980 is anyway for vehicles up to 03/2014.
If you drive a 340i from 2016 (as in your profile), this part number would not fit.
Otherwise, I would suggest looking for a coder that codes the control unit with E-Sys.

I believe it needs to be coded using esys before the retrofit process will work in ISTA. I had to do this when retrofitting active cruise control.

This part number should work.
Usually the coding should also work with ISTA, since the BMW workshop only uses ISTA.
But I would also recommend E-Sys to solve the problem.

He tryed again today and was still getting the same issue, he ran the part numbers and agreed they should work fine.

Iv booked it into BMW for next week.

I dont have E-sys or know anyone with it so going to bmw is my only option now
