M40i Awake When it Shouldn't Be

I don't lock my car when it's in my garage. I keep the keys in a tin in my kitchen, which is one floor directly above the car. I left my glasses in the car tonight and went to retrieve them about 20 minutes after returning home. Maybe longer. When I approached the car without my keys, the angels were on and ID7 was greeting me. Isn't the key supposed to go inert after 2-5 minutes? I expected the car to be dark. I did have my phone on me, which is connected to the car via bluetooth. Was that perhaps keeping the car awake?

The same thing happened to me last week with my X4. It happened again yesterday with an X3 loaner.

When I exit the car in my garage, I always push-hold the audio volume knob to shut it down. I don't know what's up. It must be something I'm doing if I've managed to make it happen with two cars in less than two weeks.

Curious: did you set up the loaner with bluetooth connectivity?

Pretty sure this is normal if you leave it unlocked.

I've had the neighbours pop round quite a long while after I got home once to tell me my 'lights were on' - he meant the angels - and it was simply because I forgot to lock it.

Nothing to do with the key.

I don’t get this penchant for leaving cars unlocked in the garage. The BMW app even records the car in unlocked so insurance wouldn’t to pay out if they got picky.

It this...it’s my property / home so I’ll do as I please?

I prefer to leave both cars unlocked in the garage. Just a personal preference. In the driveway? Never. I always lock them if they are out.

Yes, I did pair my phone with bluetooth in the iDrive so that I could make phone calls and play music.

Well...the garage is part of the house. I think that's not as common in the UK. If someone's in my house I'm more worried about the people in it rather than the possessions. In the OP I even described the use case: left something in the car, don't need to go get the key to retrieve it. Works with every other car I've ever had. In this case of course I worry about battery consumption. If I have to lock it, I guess I have to lock it, but no other car seems to require that.

I remember reading once that Mike Miller recommends locking BMW's at all times. Something about the car "waking up" periodically to see what is going on. If you leave it locked it doesn't "wake up" and extends the battery life. So I keep ours locked in the garage or even in Fort Knox.

What you're describing seems to be what's happening. I thought it was correlated with my presence near the car but maybe it's independent and just waking up while I happened to be in the garage.

Have you tried this setting:

Via iDrive:
"My Vehicle"
"Vehicle settings"
"Doors/Key"
"Turn off after door opening"

Works for me, car shuts off when I open the door.

Why BMW deviated from the double press (start/stop) to force the car to sleep, I have no idea. simple, easy. That said the only time I've caught the car awake is if I did something to activate it. Forgot to leave sunglasses in, anything that i open the door for, then it seems to stay awake for 20+ minutes.

I agree with everyone on this subject, for me I have the option checked to turn off when door is opened then if I have to go into car later I push the radio volume knob for everything to shut down again
