New F36 440i owner with some questions
Hey guys/gals, I'm a new 2017 F36 440i owner. Coming from a 2016 Mazda MX5 and loving the practicality of the GC. I have some questions/concerns as a new BMW owner with 40k miles on her.
Couple things that I'm wondering about. First, the warranty. This car was manufactured in 2016 and from what I understand I should still have some warranty left on it? I'll call a dealership shortly and see what they say, but wondering if anyone knows. Second, transmission seems jerky when cold (I've only had the car since it's been cold). Especially going down hill at about 15 mph. It'll shift to 1st gear really hard and make my body jerk forward. Also notice a jerk when throttle is being pressed very slowly. I'll feel the car engage and then I'll feel something else engage again (XDrive?, but road conditions are fine). It seems like this is only on inclines. Not 100% sure if it goes away if the car is warmed up as my commute isn't that long. I've heard it could be the EGR valve. Otherwise the transmission is super smooth and I sometimes barely notice it shifting up. I've talked with multiple indy mechanics about a flush and one mentioned that this could be CV joints as he's seen a few come through. Third, the tailgate seems to stick and only unlocks but doesn't power open. After a good cleaning of the seals it seems to power open every time I ask it to open. Fourth, noticed one fog light was on this morning. Hitting the fog light switch caused both fog lights to come on, hitting it again left one fog light on. Thoughts? Is this one of those weird BMW things that I don't understand? Fifth, did I mention how smooth the car is or how much I love the power of the B58. Thrill to drive and makes me grin when stepping on the throttle. |

If the headlight switch is in the automatic position and it's dark enough then the left or right fog light will turn on when the steering wheel is turned to illuminate the direction you are turning.

1) Warranty is 4 years or 50k miles, whichever comes first. 2) This is likely the notorious "throttle lag" which seems to be common on f3x, especially 6-cylinder. I know I've had it on 2 different 335i, and it's the one thing that really annoys me. Search here for more info, but in general: - I think it's due to bad programming of throttle and how it interacts with the transmission. - Not as bad in Sport mode - Is better after throttle adaptation reset (it's easy, search for procedure) - An aftermarket software tune can help |

While I do feel something odd during throttle input, it's mostly when I let off the throttle and brake that I notice the jerks. It feels like the transmissions trying to downshift into a lower gear. I feels too sporty IMHO when in comfort mode. |

Congrats on the car!! Regarding the jerkiness I would like to say that it has something to do with cold weather. I bought mine in June and did not notice any jerkiness until recently. Now that the temperatures are dropping mine started to do the same thing you mentioned. I have to be real gentle with the pedals or I risk spilling my coffee.
