While being at it and if you guys fine with sharing mileage numbers, you guys should absolutely check if your timing chain is stretched or not with this very inexpensive kit:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Diesel-Engi...7/173486814695

It would be nice to see some different data and if the timing might be off...

We did check the timing of course. It was spot on. Also spot on from checking TestO parameters on crankshaft to camshaft sync. Did not check chain stretch as did not have pins to lock chain tensioner.

One thing that would be nice to add to the video is which technique you guys used to get the injectors out. Slide hammer with special nuts welded together?

We just did the VCG on my x5 last night and we showed the injector puller and offset bracket. I'll try to get the video uploaded by Friday

Just added two digest videos of a valve cover replacement from beginning to the end on an X5. Not a lot of commentary but got some details on the vac line mess.

Looks clean. What mileage. Did you check the timing and chain stretch?

Only 66k miles. Started some pretty major blue smoke a few weeks after going on a diet. Started leaking oil out the rear main. Just bought the vehicle in Dec. when i did valve cover gasket, I noticed the hidden bolt under the vacuum bracket was gone and the plastic brackets holding the harness at the back of the cover were broken off. The injector bolts and a few of the rear cover bolts were loose and the gasket was in good condition (changed it anyway). So I think the gasket was done once already but not done well. The smoking is much better and I haven't seen any oil leaks as of yet. Still getting some light blue smoke on acceleration and the blow by seems pretty heavy. Might be dealing with valve sleeves?
Didn't look at timing chain but hoping it is good at its lower miles.

Increasing light blue smoke on my AM drive today. Even at idle. If it were a gasser I'd say the engine was blown.

What mileage do I need to start worrying about the valve cover gasket?

I would say 100k unless you see signs of failure. My 2011 35d has 145k with no issues. I should probably do that one soon.... not sure the VCG was the issue with the 335d. It is still smoking and saw a small puddle of oil again. I will pull the covers soon and see if it's leaking around turbos or still the rear main. Waiting for Yohz to post a vid of a complete overhaul...

Under $100 in parts including changing your vac lines. Assuming you keep original bolts.
