Diesel winter tips
Hey guys, this is going to be my first time driving a diesel car in the winter, the M3 is in storage and the 335d will be taking over daily duties.
Is there anything I should be looking out for during the very negative temps coming up in Canada? Any parts known to fail during the colder months?

I have an old 2002 Golf TDI that I drive in the winter.
I use power service fuel treatment in the tank every fill up and make sure i keep my battery healthy (on a tender if not driven often) and it starts up just fine even in sub-0F temps, and it is not even garaged. The coldest it gets here in Missouri is like -5F, and anything below 0F is really rare. A "frigid" day here is anything below 10F. Honestly besides that, I just treat it like I would a gas car and haven't had any problems. 18 years, 225k miles and counting. Still gets 50MPG. One thing I do wish I had would be a plug-in block, coolant, or oil pan heater.... one, because she really clatters on startup when its cold out, and two it takes forever to heat up for my own personal comfort given how efficient diesel engines are.

I'm in maine. I find that an additive is most important once it's below freezing. I use opti-lube winter blend all winter on every fill up, it resist gelling down to -50F. My deleted 335d has never had an issue starting the two years I've had it. It drops regularly below 0F in maine too. I believe the coldest day was -45f not including wind chill and my 335d started up just fine. Also important to make sure your glow plugs are working well, as well as the glow plug controller. Also might not be a bad idea to keep it hooked up to something like a CTEK trickle charger over night to keep the battery in top condition. Hope this helps
Oh also about oil... I run rotella t6. I find that it still works really well in cold temperatures. If you're stock though the oil isn't considered "low soot"

I'm planning on running a JBD soon, ill switch to T6 then, right now i'm running Fuchs. Yeah so far its been only about -5 Celsius, and the car has started fine. I'll see when it drops below -30. As for the additive, I thought the reason Diesel is much more expensive in the winter was because they put in additives to stop gelling. Have you been using extra additives since you got it?

I run additive year round opti-lube winter blend and xpd in the summer. Might be different in Canada but in the US it's suppose to be blended with an additive but how can you really tell? I do it for peace of mind. Diesel fuel sucks no one cares about it and some places have really shitty fuel.
