The most annoying things about my X3 M40i after 20 months

After 20 months of driving my 2018 X3 M40i here are the most annoying things that drive me insane up to the point of not wanting a BMW ever again (even though I’m a BMW fan):

1.- Auto start stop: There is no way for it to remember the setting. You need to push the button every time and I have no use for it since I’m mostly in stop and go traffic. I know this is an EPA rule or something, well, OK but at least design it well so it does not jerk when stopping. Tthe way it shuts off the engine is badly implemented: it turns of the engine the second it detects no movement but the car still has inertia and the engine shuts off an locks itself and the car jerks like if you applied full brakes.
Solution: Make it so it has memory and it shuts off half a second after it stops. Half a second will not save the planet.

2.- No memory for the driving mode: you need to push sport, adaptive or whatever setting you need each time you turn on the car. Really? In 2018 and no memory setting?

3.- Ignition sound: The ignition exhaust is too loud for around 1 full minute. Sure it was fun the first month, now it’s just annoying. It was purposely built to make a noise so loud you can’t have a conversation outside to “impress” other people I guess. This is a city SUV not an Italian super car, absolutely no one is impressed by it.
Solution: implement an option to turn it off.

4.- Ignition sequence always even when engine is hot: The full 1 minute ignition sequence where the engine makes a loud rumble lasts for too long even when the engine is hot by revving to 1250 RMP. This makes it very annoying to park the car with it lurching forward at 1250 rmp. I have no idea why is it this way, if it’s just for the sound show or what. Also, if the engine makes no start sequence in auto start stop, why does it make one when I shut off the engine and turn in on in less than 5 seconds? The engine is already hot. Just lazy engineering or teenager marketing.

5-. No torque in comfort mode: There is almost no torque below 2000 RMP and in comfort it always wants to stay below 2000 rpm to save fuel. Even a honda civic or a Camry has more torque or its more responsive than this “sports” suv. Press the pedal in comfort mode below 2000 RPM and it takes full 3-4 seconds to respond to input. This is even dangerous in some situations where power is needed and the computer decides to do nothing. The solution is sports mode, but you have to put with the annoying constant fake rumbling: read below.

6.- Fake engine sound: The speakers constantly have this fake rumble that becomes so annoying after a while in sport mode. It has fun the first month, now just plain annoying if you want to drive and have the accelerator respond in less than 3 seconds while driving or avoid the engine from stopping in stop and go traffic.
7.- M badge all over the place it gets annoying. Again, seems like this SUV was made designed by marketing, not engineers.

8.- Reverse gear is slow. It takes around 2 full seconds for reverse to engage. It is the slowest of any car I have ever driven.

You can code out #7 too on the displays. Swap out the center console trim if it bugs you that much and debadge the ///M emblem on the rear.

#8 is interesting to me, I don't experience this, but maybe it's something they have updated since.

Things like starting in Comfort mode with Start/Stop activated are because the car's mileage standard was based on those settings. But I've never understood why pushing a button or two makes some people so crazy. I have two setting buttons that I push every time I drive away in my 911. I do it as I'm pulling out of my driveway. Every time. Talk about a first world problem . . .

Just about all of your exhaust note issues are due to the way it was intentionally designed. I absolutely understand how it can be construed as 'boy-racer' stuff, but I'm going to guess more M40i owners love it than hate it.

With respect, it sounds to me like you may have bought the wrong car. That's happened to me at least twice in the past . . . things that I should have noticed or ignored in a test drive grew to annoy the hell out of me over time. So rather than get pissed off every time I get in the car, I bit the bullet and moved on to something else. We're all human and humans make mistakes.

btw . . . really? You're pissed off at the number of M badges? Man, there are a lot of people on this earth who'd like to have that problem.

It is NOT a 2-3 second delay throttle delay in comfort mode to downshift and/or spool the turbo. It’s more relaxed than sport, yes, but not as much as you are saying. If you are experiencing that, there’s a serious problem, lol.

All issues are fixable by coding and tuning. Research BimmerCode and Bootmod3.

Your comfort mode sounds horrible. I'd get that looked at. Mine is only mildly toned down from sport, would still kill most other cars out there let alone a Honda Civic.

FWIW I've coded off ASD and it only makes a minor difference. The sport exhaust is still installed and audible. It's worth a shot but you may be disappointed that the sound you don't like is not all fake.

You now, when all of you ate talking about coding - why on earth should someone has to pay additional money to have some things change on a 50k+ car, which could/should be implemented by the car maker. Not everybody is so brave, not to mention the possible warranty issues.
But I too agree with a poster, who said, that maybe the OP bought a wrong car. Being annoyed by such/so many things after 20 months, I would too consider selling the car and buy something else. Maybe some money loss will be involved, but. decisions decisions..

Completely agree, nothing wrong with Comfort at all, more "relaxed" yes, but no lag! Eco Pro is awful on regular driving etc, but is actually ok on a steady speed motorway trip.

In the time the OP took to write this, could have:

a) found solutions to issues
b) found another car

Well, if anyone doesn't have at least some things that annoy them about their car after owning it for more than a year, you probably have pretty low expectations - which would be nice, actually. I also kind of obsess about all sorts of little things in my vehicles, so I totally understand. I have yet to own a car that has no issues or annoyances.

It's threads like this one here that were incredibly helpful for me when investigating the car I wanted to purchase and preparing me for the shortcomings I would need to endure, so, OP, thanks for posting this!

$80 (USD) investment for the adapter and software, Bimmercode makes it virtually risk free as long as you don't use expert mode and it wouldn't void the warranty for anything of the settings he is choosing to change based on his post.

Could BMW implement those changes? Of course! It's an easy code job at a dealer, will they do it? Most likely not, BMW made the car to function a certain way, price of the car is irrelevant to that.

This...

I agree with #1, that drives me crazy. But I've never experienced any throttle lag in Comfort or any other mode. 2-3 second lag in reverse? I would be at the dealer...

Number 5:
I've complained ad nauseam about this and how the X3 4-banger loaners I've gotten feel so much more responsive when daily driven down low (what most people do everyday). The mppsk tune on the M40i uses "overboost" on kick-down to thrust you forward to give the almost immediate sensation of brutal torque/speed but it's not practical in everyday driving. It is what it is I guess.

Also, at least for me, we should add the extreme wind noise at most speeds (since we don't get acoustic glass in the US) and really loud tire noise on the 21's if you get the garbage Birdgestone Alenza's. For me, the fun has worn off...I actually can't wait to get out of the car sooner than later for these 3 touch points alone.
