It's plug/play with your existing head unit. You literally just unplug the wire from your current screen, and plug it in to this screen. It's the same wire, same connectors, mounting points, etc.

Gotta love BMW interchangeability

Hey,

Just a little confused - I know codemybimmer sells a set that includes the head unit in order for all the new functionality (carplay, id6...etc) to work.

I would think all the software is in the head unit itself...and i'd need a new head unit to actually access those functions.

Cheers

You'd want to check your compatibility; I'm not sure about the cutoff (date) for which hardware supports the latest software. You may or may not need a hardware upgrade of your HU. If you don't, it's just a software upgrade, AFIK. You'll have to do a bit of research to identify your HU. I believe Bimmer-Tech has a nice page explaining the differences and compatibility.

what you are saying is, you can just use it as a big pretty screen with no special functionality if you just want a larger screen for your vehicle? special functionality would require a software update?

Yes, it will just be a bigger, prettier screen. Any functionality will be with the iDrive system. It's like getting a new, bigger, higher rez monitor for your desktop computer. You just have to make sure the 'computer' is compatible.
