Bad Water Pump?
A couple weeks ago I embarked on a 3 hour drive to have my coolant expansion tank burst 1 hour in to the drive. I had the car towed back and replaced the tank myself. I drove the car around town for 2 weeks with no issues.
Fast forward to Monday, I took off on another 3 hour drive. Almost two hours in to the drive, I got the dreaded “Car Overheating” message on my I-Drive. I was able to nurse it by driving it and shutting it off a couple times but ultimately had it towed to my destination. I took it to a local mechanic who tried many times to get the car to overheat as it did for me, but the car operated fine. The car is now currently 2 hours away so I’m not able to pull codes. Does it sound like the water pump? It’s just throwing me off in that it’s fine around town but overheats when I’m on an extended drive. The car is a 2011 335 with 87k miles. As far as service records show, it’s an original water pump and thermostat. Thanks guys! |

Hello the water pump could be possible. Since you can't get codes maybe try the bleed procedure to hear it running. I've had two n52 cars overheat due to dead / bad batteries but it sounds like your battery is fine.

Just replace it, even if it isn’t the only thing going on it’s always good to know you have a new pump in your car. It’s the biggest downfall in these cars.
