adaptive xenon headlight function
i cant really find any info on this. and im sure its normal operation but figured i would ask. my 335 has the xenon headlights and uses the far outer xenon bulb for hi and low. im assuming this is normal. but what would the inner headlight bulb be used for other than daytime running lights. if i change these out with led or another xenon bulb is there a way i can code the dme to use this as a normal function also?

I know they can be coded to operate as hi-beams/ flash-to-pass lights. There's a setting in the FRM to use either the outer xenons or the inner halogens as hi-beams/ flash-to-pass.

I know it's hard to tell because it isn't dark outside but is there any reason why my driver side bulb in significantly brighter than the passenger side. One picture is with driver wide covered up. The brighter one is with driver side showing

Brighter because aim is off or one bulb was replaced and the other wasnt.
The inner bulb on adaptive lights is used as a cornering light, turn the wheel while pointing against a wall and you will see the light on the side you are turning illuminate that direction.

Bulb is brighter. I re adjusted my headlights because I wanted them slightly higher they were a little low. But the driver side itself is way brighter. I have them sitting even. I just ordered 2 new bulbs with a 600k brightness. Hopefully new bulbs fixes the issue. If not may be a ground problem

Adaptive headlights should always have that function unless its been coded out.
What year is the car?

I personally just ordered cheapo Amazon 6000k to compare brightness and tint since I like a whiter glow than yellow ish. If I lose to much output I won't keep them As for your cornering lights try again at night with headlights to auto and put your indicator. It should turn on to. Also when you go to reverse, both cornering inner lights should light up when headlights are on. If they still don't light up then perhaps they were coded out or bulb is dead. But I think you would get a warning... not 100% sure tho. |

2008. And no they don't turn on in reverse or turning. My headlights are always set to auto. I never turn them otherwise. They only time they come on is if I use the flash to pass. Or daytime running light which I have daytime lights turned off

While all E90 xenons are self-leveling, not all are adaptive. If you don't have adaptive headlights (that turn), then those inner bulbs do nothing other than flash-to-pass or DRL at reduced brightness. As for the difference in brightness, as TypeDreezy mentioned, it's probably an issue of one bulb having been replaced. That's most likely. But! On my car, I had a brightness imbalance on my actual xenons. Replaced the bulbs; problem was still there. Turned out there was "fogging" on the inside of my headlight/projector lens, probably caused by moisture or other contamination after the dealership didn't full attach the backing cover (noobs). Worth a look, but probably just mismatched (age) bulbs. You'd likely notice anything that would physically diminish light output from your halogens.

The projector itself has a common issue of getting a fog/haze on the back of it diminishing light thrown, very common with our lights. Not something you can 'seal' out. But it definitely cant be made worse from a bum light seal.

Is there a way to tell just by looking at it if it's bad. I know I'll find out for sure when my new lights come in. But like if I pull the bulb out and look in there is it noticeable

Worth checking for sure, but the fogging referred to affects the projector lens specifically. So if your only issue is the inner halogens, that thread likely won't apply. Interested read nonetheless!
