I have a 2008 BMW 328xi, bought the car new back in 2008 and she's still my baby. Never had any serious issues. But my car now has 170,000 Miles. I hear the transmission usually starts to fail around 150-200 thousand miles. My transmission still seems to work fine. Every now and then I get a rough feeling shift but that's about it. Do you guys think I'm going to have to replace my transmission soon? I've seen some used ones on eBay with under 80,000 miles for under 1000$ USD. How much do you think a shop would charge for them swapping out my transmission for one I give them.

Where did you hear the transmissions start to fail around 150-200k? I've never heard that, and there are quite a few on here with 200k+.
Have you ever changed the fluid and filter? I would start there, and recommend Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic for the GM 6L45 transmission.

Mine has nearly 200k miles on it and is definitely on its last legs, but it was quite low on fluid at one point, and I’m pretty sure I made the problem worse by changing some components in the valve body in an effort to improve things.
No need to replace it unless you’re really bothered by its performance I have my doubts the dealership will want to install a unit you provide. Even if they would, I’d suggest taking it to a reputable transmission shop or indy for the install instead. As CT mentioned, try fluid/filter first and then go from there.

For the E90, BMW states to change the automatic transmission fluid at 100,000 mile intervals. It is stated in the maintenance booklet that comes with the original set of manuals in the trunk.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
