changing battery

hey all I have a question.

im swapping out batteries between my e90s.

my 09 335i is dead, which is running a 640 cca w/ 80 ah

and im trying to put in my 06's 330xi which has a 90 ah and 740 cca but im having a hard time pulling it out

the battery on the 06 has this foam like thing attached to the side of it by the negative terminal and the other battery did not.

does anyone know what this is?

I've replaced the battery of both sizes in two different E90s. The E90 90/740 is a larger battery than the 80/640; H8 vs. H7 battery case size. The gray Styrofoam piece is a crash pad in case the car is rear ended. The pad is added for the larger battery to compensate for the lack of crush area consumed by the larger battery case (as compared to the smaller battery case) and to protect the battery from the tall stem hold down bolt. BMW uses a different rear battery clamp for the smaller battery with a short hold down bolt. You'll have to swap the rear hold-down clamp from the Xi to the 335i to fit the larger battery into the 335i. Also, you'll have to reprogram the 335i to properly charge the larger battery.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Do you have a tool to set the car's computer to run correctly with the new battery amperage, or are you going to take it to a dealer to do it?

And I gotta ask... why not just get a new battery for the 335i?
