I am trying to find out the same thing. I called BMW and they said it was in the Shifter unit, (PRNDL switch). I replaced it and I am still getting the same message. I posted it a week ago somewhere else and all I got was to 'buy a used transmission"

There are several different codes subtitles for 5088 and mine was originally PRNDL Gear Selection Switch sensor, interconnect or Neutral safety switch. My Carly shows it as well as my foxwell. I will keep you posted.

When's the last time (if at all) you serviced the transmission? Fluid/filter/seals?

three 1/2 years ago and 6 months ago with 145 miles on that change. Strong with no slippage. Since I owned it, I have not done the seals. Was thinking of this for this weeks project

Those sleeve seals and D-seal are known to crack and bleed off pressure.

Okay I will pull them today. The car has 272000 miles on it. You would never know it.

Thank you

Update.

I pulled the module and sent to a Module Experts in Jacksonville Florida. I was told they can fix it. I paid 175.00 and sent it. I then got a call and said that they cant fix it ( it is sealed with epoxy) and they said my diagnosis was correct and they found a short. Hmm imagine that. I ask myself "myself, would this company have known that the module for the Transmission range selector is irreparable." I paid $99.00 for a diagnosis that I provided them, they said they looked for a used one. (there all over ebay) refunded by additional money less shipping. Be careful, I personally think its a way to make a quick hundred when they are professionals that know they cant fix these modules. Time for the seals.

Well this will be my last post here on this subject.

I bought a used transmission from my favorite salvage yard LKQ. 475.00. I removed the Mechatronics unit from the transmission. I swapped it. This used transmission had 100k on her and mine has 272000. I swapped it, replaced the old seals with new seals and buttoned her up.

I have a 100k transmission should I ever need one. I cleared the adaptation and away I went. Not smooth but all gears. What wait, did I hear someone said you need to have BMW program the unit. WRONG. Experts told me no need if from same donor car. After 10 minutes of driving, stop and start, I felt it necessary to engage the after burners, stepped on it and turbo boosts activated. Away I went. Pulled over and restarted the car and smooth shifting was obvious.

So, no transmission swap but just the mechantronics. No programming from dealer. SERIOUSLY. Did it on the garage floor.

No 5088 code as of yet. No P2076 no nothing. Perfect shifting and no limp mode yet.

Transmission range selectors, gear selector switch, neutral safety switch is attached to mechatronics. I hope this post helps someone. Two years and countless useless advise except for a few here in this post and I’m driving again.

Countless useless advice or more like Thomas Edison, they provided you with countless ideas that you proved didn't work.
