winter tires and wheels in New England

I realize there is a similar thread for the uk, but I did not want to hijack that one, my questions are a bit different, and focused for New England

I am looking to purchase a 40i in New England. I want it to handle snow and cold conditions reliably. I am planning to get the off road package which may have a "snow" setting. I am considering 19 and 20" wheels. Is appearance the only practical difference?

Is it worth the 3k to purchase winter tires and wheels?

Are there other options? If you get aftermarket wheels, can you get the tire sensors to connect to the vehicle?

Thanks for any comments and suggestions.

I live in the northeast (PA). We took delivery of our 50i with the 22s in December. They come with summer only tires so we ordered 20" aftermarket wheels and blizzark winter tires for winter from tire rack. We also got a set of tpms sensors so at season change they can just swap the winter wheels and tires to the summer. I think if you got the 20" wheels you would be ok w all seasons. Or you can get winter tires for those wheels. If you go 21 or 22 - the story gets a little trickier. But you mention 19 or 20" anyways so you should be good. Hope that answers you. Good luck with purchase!

How much did the 20” winter set up set you back? I assume there is a material difference in price vs the OEM winter setup you can find (mostly in Canada it seems) since a lot of people seem to be going the aftermarket route.

Hi, it was my UK thread but no dramas re hijacking the more he merrier! I had a quote from BMW for £4K for a set of winter wheels and tyres; I nearly fell off my chair! Also intending in getting aftermarket. Spoken to a few specialists and provided you get decent quality and correct load rating there is little difference between oem and aftermarket apart from the crazy high markup. Price for a full set of 20" BBS 275mm wheels with Yokohama Blue Earth winter tyres is circa £1900 in the UK so I will prob do that.

Right. And quite a bit cheaper than the OEM setup:

Wheels we got were around $2300 with tires and sensors. This is a pic of them and one of the vehicle with them mounted.
