BMW 335d - sensitive throttle makes town driving jerky

Hi guys

As a relatively new owner of a BMW 335d (which, overall, I love to bits) I am disappointed by the seemingly over-sensitive throttle pedal in my car. Doing a lot of driving in central London I am driving the car with the lightest of possible touches on the throttle but still cannot prevent it 'snatching' or jerking as it moves away or accelerates. I have even taken to completely lifting my foot clean off the throttle just after speed bumps to prevent bunny hopping. Anyone else experience this?

Has anyone with a remap noticed an improvement here?

(My previous car, Merc SLK, had a winter setting on the auto which bypassed first gear, making for a smooth driving experience around town. To achieve this is my 335d I would have to drive it as a manual and select 2nd gear starting off to achieve a similar smoothness, and that defeats the point of the auto box.)

And yes, I am well aware that some of the responses to this will be recommendations that I learn to drive properly ;-) To that I would say that I have been lucky enough to get drives in (not own!) a wide range of luxury sports cars ( Porsche Cayman's, 911's, Mercedes CLK 500, Bentley Continental GT, Mercedes SL600) and have never experienced anything like it.

Serious responses only please ;-) I am tempted by a remap anyway for improved performance (and possibly mpg) but would definitely do it aif the remapper could make the throttle more chilled out at town speeds ;-)

Any feedback from remapped 335d owners appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,

The only time I've noticed a really jerky power delivery (e.g. touch the pedal and a spike of power, then the next minute touch the pedal and nothing or normalish power) was when I was running one of my first remaps. As standard the car was always lovely and smooth and the pedal feel / responsiveness was always consistent. If you bought your car new then I would just return it to the Dealer and ask them to interrogate the issue, if you bought it used the it could be running a suspect map (although I think this quite unlikely). You can have the car remapped and this will possibly resolve the issue, but it is certainly best to get it looked at by the Dealer first, they will probably just flash the ECU wth the latest version of the software and this *should* cure the problem.

Jules.

I'd agree with Carlos. My car has never gone into 1st in town as far as I'm aware. No real hills that may change this, but it pulls cleanly and nicely away in 2nd.

I've Kangarood once, but I put that down to me being sat too far away from the pedal (after my wife used it and pushed the seat back) and not having proper control.

I would suggest that the first port of call would be to your local BMW dealer, and ask firstly whether the engine ECU software is fully up to date, and then secondly ask the dealer to reset BOTH the gearbox and engine adaptations. A jerky/over-sensitive throttle is more than likely down to the adaptations being calibrated to be over-zealous in initial throttle openings. I had this done on my car and the difference was night and day.

Oh, and to reset the adaptations takes a dealer about twenty minutes - all they need to do is hook the car up to the GT1 machine and press the reset buttons... Uploading new ECU software is a much longer process though, normally requiring a whole day or even an overnight stay.

My 325d E90 was fairly relaxed when pulling away, whereas my 330d E92 has a much more sensitive throttle, not problematic unless I forget I'm not in the E90..............

I would get the dealer to reset and see if that cures it.

I've never had it happen to me, but my wife has when driving the 335. Don't consider it a problem though. My boss wished for the same response from his X5 3.0d but they couldn't alter it at the dealers so he got rid of it.

Regards

Chris

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I will take the car in to the dealer and get them to confirm if it needs an adjustment.

Thanks

Well, you could try this "reset" trick - some poeple have reported it really improved things for them. I'm not sure if it resets the auto transmission and/or the throttle, but it's worth a try. If this doesn't help, I'd say it's time for a visit to your dealer...

You put your key in/hit start ONCE so the electronics of the car come on but it is not started.

Then hold down the gas, past the downshift point to the floor for 25-30 seconds straight.

If you listen, at about 25s exactly you will hear some "noise" and that is the tranny "resetting" itself to factor specs

Like I am sure you know these cars are smart and the auto tranny is no exception. It adapts and learns your driving style-but the catch is, which is why I noticed an improvment. Apparently it "learns" for about 1000 miles and then kind of "locks" those settings in so-to-speak. So however you drove the car off the lot or whover drove it off the lot-it was really those first 1k that determined how the autobox shifted itself.

So anyway after I did that my downshifts were like 10 times smoother and overall shifting was much crisper and smooth.

Definetly try it out if you have an auto. It will just re-adapt to your current driving style-which is great since I totally drove different when I first got the car.

Now here's a funny thing... the power spike problem at feather-touch pressure on my throttle has fixed itself!!
Coming back from an 'enthusiastic' drive through deserted 'a' and 'b' roads of Snowdonia National Park (I recommend it to anybody who loves open road driving!), using paddle shift and plenty of beans, driving the car the next day was like a revelation.
No longer any bunny-hopping over speed bumps or leg cramps trying to control the schizophrenic power delivery at slow speeds - instead a smooth and predictable throttle and a car that is now a pleasure to drive through town.

Not sure what happened electronically, but until it happens again, I am one happy 335d owner! ;-)

Thanks for all your feedback.

I noticed after a trackday that my car was much more responsive. Gearbox must have adapted.
