Thanks for sharing. Is it accurate to say the sound gets progressively more obvious when RPMs increase?

The good news: the warranty is still in effect.

It's very difficult to suggest anything definitive. It could be as simple as something being loose.

Please ask the SA to do oil analysis which will tell if there is evidence of excessive amount of metal particles. Most dealers will not do this procedures during the first diagnostic attempt. Please insist.

There is a remote possibility that some component could be wearing out prematurely. Small percentage of N55 engines (your engine is B58) was affected by excessive connecting rod bearing wear. Oil analysis performed by the dealer confirmed excessive rod bearing wear.

Good luck! Warranty is there for you. Please update this thread when you can.

Thanks for the update. The dealer did everything right including performing oil analysis.

Enjoy the almost new engine and turn the page!

Glad it is resolved properly.

First case I have heard of with the newer B58 engine.

Same, I couldn't find any other examples online. That's likely why BMW asked for the complete motor back without any further disassembly at the dealership. I was told that their engineers want to understand the failure.

They said next Friday at the earliest. Motor should be in on Tuesday.

They put me in a nice 2019 X3. But...

[rant]I will say though, the digital gauge cluster in that car is a fucking horror show at night. The illumination is always white with no option to choose the classic BMW amber, which I think is especially shitty because it would only require a little bit of software to accomplish the ability to customize it. It's a bit of a slap in the face to owners who have owned and loved BMWs over many years (I've had 7 over the past 20 years between my wife and I).

Second, the gauges look like a shitty pinball machine in sport mode, but there's no option when configuring sport mode (i.e. chassis, drivetrain, etc.) to not use the shitty gauges. So when I want the car to drive the way I want it, I have to look at gauges that look like they were designed by a team of blind people on a conference call.

Finally, the gauges are WAY too bright and doesn't have an independent adjustment like the center control display and ambient lighting already do, so either the cluster is too bright but you can see the HVAC and radio controls, or the screen is just right but everything else is too dim. They really struck out there. If I were designing this car I'd offer two options in software via iDrive:

1) Ability to choose color of gauge illumination:
a) Always Amber
b) Always White
c) Auto switch from white during the day to orange at night
2) Ability to independently change the brightness of the cluster independently via iDrive, just like the control display. This would give the car 4 options:
a) Brightness wheel on the LCM (already there)
b) Independent brightness adjustment for control display (already there)
c) Independent brightness adjustment for ambient lighting (already there)
d) Independent brightness adjustment for digital gauge cluster (NEW!)
The whole point of digitization, LCD screens, and software control is to offer near-infinite customization, so this should be a no-brainer for BMW. If a long-time BMW owner wants his digital cluster to just like his past 7 cars have, that should be an option in software. Or just give me regular fucking analog gauges, that would be best! haha [/rant]
My 2018 340's digital gauge turns orange at night. You can also stop the red sport mode gauges and keep it classic if you prefer.

I'm sure the X3 has similar capabilities

This cluster looks quite a bit different than the 6WB full digital cluster in the F30 (which is one of the better digital clusters I've seen) - I'd consider it a major downgrade.

I'll post a photo for you tomorrow when I can get a good shot in the daylight.
My ex had one, but I didn't spend enough time in to remember
