Battery discharging while stopped....

Getting this message on my sons N47.

Says "electrical devices were temporarily switched off".

He had battery trouble and it finally died. Went and had a new battery put in and registered.

Still getting this message.

Voltmeter shows 12.3V after sitting for 24 hours. Shows 13.4 while idling.

In Texas so it isn't too cold. No phone chargers or anything left plugged into any charge ports. Car is locked as soon as he exits which should put ECM to sleep.

You need to identify the cause of the drain. Could be Comfort Assess, (if fitted), seems to be a common reason for battery drain. Any unusual clicking from it when locking or unlocking?

Door handles are known to cause a drain if they get a fault. I've had two handle failures on my own F11, one drained the battery and threw the warnings you are seeing.

If I don't drive my car for more than a week I have to use the key fob to open instead of the comfort access... then I get the discharge notice... car still starts fine and battery is still holding charge...

How close do you have the key FOB? If it’s too close, that could be what’s causing some of the drain.

Normally, I see about 14.5 VDC at battery when the car is idling. Wonder if you alternator is not putting out the correct voltage any longer?

Agree, would expect a higher charge rate. Was the registration done correctly, its what sets the initial charge rate? If you have Carly you can check & re-register it yourself.

Also if the system is shutting something down you need to find out what it is. Most likely the source of the drain if there is one. It might be shutting something down that is normally active because the battery is not being sufficiently charged.

We have devices on the BMW that go to sleep with the lock but many are still drawing amps to keep their memory settings alive.

FWIW my Cobra has been inactive for 3 months due to a house renovation dumpster blocking it in the garage.

Car fired up on the first key turn without any outside battery support like a trickle charge etc. It has a ECU & entertainment system that stays hot, to preserve their memories, when the car is shut off. Its a low amp draw but still a draw.

If you are seeing 12.3V after 24 hours, I wouldn't suspect a battery drain issue.

What if you disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, and re-connect?

A fully charged 12V battery should read around 13.2 volts straight off the charger & about 12.7 after 24 hours. At 12 volts its dead.

Cells in modern batteries are rated at 2.2 volts each, a 12 volt battery has 6 cells.

I’ve never seen this on my 335i after it sits for a week, although I tend to use the fob more than comfort access to open the doors. Our X5 3.5i with the same N55 engine routinely sits for 2-3 weeks in the garage with no issues at all on startup, although it doesn’t have comfort access.

When I flashed my car I had the charger on it and it was at 70% and only had this instance happen a few times since I usually don't let it sit for a whole week... I had to flash my car again and left the charger on it till it hit 80% charged and haven't had the problem since I wrote this the first time... granted today was the first big test since I haven't drove it for 7days now and just checked and all is good so far... (been skiing for the Holidays ) ... I've had it to the dealer and they also charged it but was still having problems... they said wasn't due for any warranty work so they wouldn't replace it... but if it happens again i'll buy a new one ... the hard part is driving the car for a distance at a reasonable speed and time allowing it to charge properly... everywhere I go is only a mile a way... When I goto my work (once maybe a week) I drive literally one mile from garage to parking spot... I take the long horseshoe freeway tour on the way back if it's before 2:00 and do a quick run... anytime after that and it's all bumper too bumper... I'll keep an eye on it...
