NorCal Dyno Day

Hi all,

A few of us have negotiated with a CA tuning shop to organize a dyno day.

The date is Saturday, January 19th and the shop location is in Elk Grove.

Just wanted to offer this up to those that were interested.

If you'd like to participate, please reach out to me via this thread and I can provide more information.

At this time, the cost is $60 per person, but may be lowered further based on participation.

The shop and dyno have been used by myself and a number of other forum members and we can attest that it is a quality rig and that the techs take their time to get the data right before saving the runs.

The fee entitles you to 3 dyno passes and you will be provided a printed copy of the dyno graph as well as an emailed copy of the data.

For those of you who have never dyno'd before, this is an opportunity to do so for far less money than it would normally cost. For those tuners out there who want to check their latest output numbers, this is an easy win.

Hope to see you there.

Sweet! So if I wanted to do a comparison of a stock tuning map vs. stage 2, how many runs are recommended to establish a baseline vs. delta?

They say to allow about 100 miles of driving between tunes to allow the DME to make the most of it.

But if you wanted to do them back-to-back, I don't see why not.

How long does it take to switch maps?

About 5 mins. Do they also include data logs?

The will email you the dyno data, yep. As far as logs go, if you have a way to do logging on your car, not sure how that works as I have zero experience in that arena.

Interesting as most reputable dyno places want an oil change and new plugs immediately prior to dyno.

Thanks for your input, but that is overkill for a few casual runs.

Naturally, those that care to do so might see some benefit in their numbers, but we are likely talking less than a percent or two. Quite negligible.

Safety is the major issue. Not an extra 1%.

That's why I stated reputable shops require it.

Interesting; I've participated in a lot of dyno days and never heard one shop state this. My car was done at EAS and they didn't say a word. Not that it's a bad idea but most gearheads keep their cars in pretty good shape I'd imagine (including changing plus depending on car usage..dragstrip runs etc.).

Be interesting to see the results and what tuning the participants have...(BM3, Dinan, etc.). If you guys can put together a list, it'd be very informative afterwards!

The repute of a shop is probably dictated by a few more factors than simple maintenance reminders and the likelihood of some catastrophic failure in the drivetrain during stress testing is certainly not appreciably reduced by doing so.

To each their own, but every shop accepts the risks of running a vehicle on a dynamometer, oil changes and spark plugs notwithstanding. If it makes you, and these other shops you refer to sleep better to do maintenance beforehand, then awesome!

Great idea. Once the list is confirmed, I'll add a speadsheet that lists all of the car data, including make/model/mods.

Starts at 10AM. Planning on getting the Bay Area folks done first so they have time to travel back home if they need to.

Anyone planning on driving up from the Bay Area, might I suggest an early morning meetup and caravan up?

I'm in the South Bay, but it would make most sense to meet somewhere closer to you. Once we get an idea of people in our convoy, let's figure out a logical rendezvous.

You seem to be a wet blanket around these parts.

Having tuned about 50 cars, I have NEVER had a shop require an oil change and spark plug change prior to a dyno.

This is just nonsense. Be happy.
