Car stolen
Someone who works in my building had his SUV stolen in broad daylight last week. Once I heard this story I thought I'd come on this board and seek advice. I have a 2015 428i GC. Does this car have some type of internal GPS where if my car was stolen it could be tracked? If not what precautions could I take to ensure if my car was stolen it could be located by the authorities? Are there any tracking devices that can be recommended? Can my car even be stolen in the first place?
Thank you to anyone who offers advice. Happy Holidays |

In case they are able to disable the feature in the car it makes me wonder if I should buy some sort of magnetic GPS thing I can put under the car for a backup option. |

Fairly sure 428GC's aren't that desirable to steal....if they want mine, they can take it and I don't want it back lol.

Oh I like the car..it's flawless with 24k miles...but it's not irreplaceable by any means. I typically love the cars I buy (My Impala SS will turn 23yrs old this weekend and I've had it the entire time)...but my GC, although nice, is just a nice car. It's never made me fall in love with it or to mod it extensively. It'll either be traded for a 440GC or go 2 door and do a Porsche Cayman/718 or Vette maybe late next year. We'll see.

I hope that if any of my cars are ever stolen that insurance would take care of it and I would never see that car again. Who knows what they did to that car? Joy ride? Sat naked on the seats? Didn't use the cup holders? Madness.
If anything I wish there was a camera and a self destruct button for BMW Connected. I would watch them die from a fiery explosion from the comfort of my own toilet.

Located is located, whether by the app or BMW. Besides, what are you going to do if you locate the car? Go Dirty Harry on the perps?
Report the car stolen, let BMW tell the cops where it is, let them handle it. |

The connected drive vehicle finder is a bit slow to update. It runs off the car GPRS sim so is also dependant on the signal strength.
It's probably accurate to within 20 metres. One of my neighbours had his M4 stolen twice within a space of 12 months. First time they broke into the house whilst he was asleep and took the keys. Found the tracker ripped out and lying in his parking space. 2nd time they were filmed on CCTV using a laptop to relay the key signal to the car. They didn't even need the car key. So deactivating the key radio or not speccing comfort entry would help. My 428i was giving me problems with reliability. I would have been happy for them to take my car. Even accidentally left the car unlocked with the key in. Unfortunately the car was still there the next morning... Last edited by kingmonkey8; 12-27-2018 at 05:48 PM.. |
