A few threads popped up recently. It's a legitimate issue and sucks. Here is one with photos:

Looking at this thread and the linked thread, it appears those reporting here, the failures are F30 320s and 328s. Does this apply to others of the F30 (2011-2016) family. I haven't received any notification nor heard of any similar failures. It is not in the NHTSA recall database for my VIN. Looking at REALOEM, depending on the submodel, many/if not most of the Steering gear/boxes (w/EPS) are shared across most of these platforms. This failing at highway speeds or winding roads- UGH!

I had the recall done about a month ago. As far as I am aware all they did was just swap out the bolts.
First I thought they just did a messy job and the rack housing looked like it was covered in grease or oil.
I think they must have also applied some corrosion protection.

Gotta get mine fixed this week, Im nervous my oil pump started wining too at 95k miles.. Car has had oil changes at 7k intervals with synth since new.. I think its just the noise that causes no issues. I dont have the chain chatter noises. Just a whine before it warms up, Other than that she rips nicely

I wondered about that, too. I think my car is 100% desert rat.

I just posted this in the other thread.

-----------

Interesting story about my experience around this recall/problem.

I've had my car a couple months now, and the first time I had it up on stands to do some installs, I took everything apart to just take a look and inspect everything. Everything looks awesome, except in this specific area. The recall just takes care of the bolts really, there are 3. They describe the issue as either the bolts can be eroded a bit or they are "loose" and need to be retorqued down to spec. It's literally like a 20 min visit once they get your car in there.*

Well low and behold I look at the area and 1 bolt is completely missing and there is a crack in the electric motor housing. I was freaking out since the car was immaculate other than this. No previous accidents, and definitely nothing to assume this type of issue. Called my local indy since they are friends to get their opinion. Thankfully they called to get the part numbers for a potential replacement and find out there is a recall out for this exact item. Called BMW and they explain what I just said, its normally just retightening or replacing those 3 bolts, simple recall. THANKFULLY the foreman was great and said everything would be covered, but I had to get an entire steering rack replacement. They had my car for over 4 weeks, and I was in a loaner.

Very fortunate this was out there. And then funny part is I get the same letter OP posted about a week before I get my car back, good times.

Glad no real issues occurred and will be glad to get mine taken care of as well, love this car.

Strange, They replaced mine no questions asked ... I mean I did get a letter stating I need this with my VIN #, Did you get the letter? Its just bolts and some grease of some sort. Now my noisy oil pump on the other hand....... Cant wait for that can of worms.

Best of luck, It seems to be a minor recall but sounds like it would suck if it were to fail.
