Battery registration question

I have the (paid) Bimmerlink app, and I use a VeePeak OBD2 adapter to use it. Earlier today, I installed a new battery in my car, and I tried to use the app to register it. However, I repeatedly got an error message saying that the battery registration failed. The battery I bought is not identical to the OEM battery that I took out. It says it’s 95amp vs (I believe) 90amp for the OEM battery. They are both 900 CCA. Is there any way to make Bimmerlink work, or should I look for a different solution? I have sent the same question to the developer (no answer yet), but thought I'd run it by this group as well to see what answers I get.

Thanks,
Jeff

I thought bimmerlink would only do it if the new battery was exactly the same as the old battery?

Ok I remembered it sort of incorrectly. Here’s the post about it.

If you are replacing with same model battery, only registration is required.

If you are placing battery that has difference amp hour rating or reserve capacity. The car needs to be programmed for the new capacity (example 90AH) THEN it needs to be registered

Correct. The proper battery specs need to be coded prior to registration.

BMW does not offer a 90ah AGM battery any longer. It’s now a 92ah AGM battery and it’s half the cost.

The aftermarket AGM batteries that most would use if not OEM are also 92ah.

I bought a battery from an auto parts store that is a match for the vehicle. The one I purchased is actually slightly better (?) than the OEM battery. I assume 95ah is better than 90ah, but I don't really know the practical difference. The main reasons were cost and convenience. I paid $189 from a place by my house and put it in myself (vs $460 at the dealer, which would require an appointment, etc). I just have to figure out how to get the registration done. I heard back from Bimmerlink, and he asked me to send him the error log. I'll post when I hear back on that.

I have a local indy shop looking at an oil leak today (most likely the OFHG), and I asked them if they can register the battery while they have it. They're not a Euro-specific shop, though, so they're going to let me know if they can do it.

You need a better scanner with more capabilities. Carly allows you to input different specs for a new battery. Or look at the foxwell nt510.

The shop that is doing my OFHG is going to do the battery registration, so...problem solved. I may consider getting a Carly, but Bimmercode and Bimmerlink have served me pretty well up to this point.

Is there an official way to do this? We should have a right to repair our own vehicles without fear of voiding warranty from using third party coding tools.

If i understand correctly, you can use ISTA/D to register a new same / rating battery.

You would need ISTA/P to code a new type / new rating.

Although 90ah-92ah seem close enough that you can just register as the same one no?

Yes, if you switch between 90Ah and 92Ah, you only need registration, not coding.

There isn’t a separate coding for 92Ah. The same E-word, A090, is used for both 90Ah and 92Ah AGM batteries.

How did your batt change/registration turn out. I'll be going through this soon and have BimmerLink to register it. Haven't purchased batt yet. Sent you pm that reads the same.

Has anyone actually used Bimmerlink to register a new battery yet? I see lots of talk "That it can" but I've yet to run across any post that states they've actually done it. I'm ready to replace my 2015 328i battery and have the bimmerlink soft and reader. Dealer wants $469 to do it.

I wasn't able to get Bimmerlink to register my battery, but I did end up buying Carly also, which appears to have that capability. I haven't used either of them for several months, however, so I don't know what the current capability is for either of them.

For around $100 less than your stealer wants you can buy a battery and a Schwaben scan tool that will register your battery and a whole lot more.

Just FYI...I had local Pep Boys (in Calif) install and code/register factory spec AGM battery in my 2012 X3; $215 total cost. Very fair price if you don't want to mess with registration/coding yourself.

I'll have to see if AAA does that. They come to your location and are cheaper usually than pep boys. The batteries they use usually exceed factory spec.

Thats pretty good , theres an indy shop here in Colton charges close to 600 for battery replacement and register. They do good jobs on German cars but damn.

Error registering battery with BimmerLink

I am hoping for some help as I am experiencing the same error message when trying to use BimmerLink to register my 2011 E93's new Advance Auto 95Ah AGM battery that replaced the BMW AGM 92Ah AGM battery installed six years ago. I have attached a screenpic of the error below.

All the error codes have been cleared, so that's not actually the problem. And following BimmerLink support's advice I spent another 15 minutes this morning getting to and disconnecting/reconnecting the battery but that didn't help any. I have also tried restarting the car and app having ComfortAccess key in the slot or not.

It's been roughly 10 days of not far driving on the new battery in an unregistered state.

BimmerLink support has been timely but is out of suggestions. I can get a refund and order a more expensive Foxwell NT520, but BimmerLink support believes I will run into the same registration challenge.

What advice does anyone have? I'm more than a little frustrated and tired of spinning wheels on an effort where getting the battery in place in the tight convertible slot should have been the biggest challenge!

Thanks in advance,
Trevor in Austin

Does the Advance Auto you bought the battery from have an OBD tool?
