Seat belt fraying???!!

I have 2015 4 series and just noticed that the right rear seat belt has a section about 3" long that is fraying pretty badly. The frayed section is keeping the belt from retracting all the way. Has anyone else seen this? On a related note, does anyone know if the seat belt assembly can be replaced DIY?

I called my local BMW dealer already and they said the seat belt is not covered because my warranty has expired. Perhaps I need to call again?

When you do get them replaced, brush them over with some melted butter to prevent the new ones from fraying. You can use a cooking brush if you have one, or just use a hand towel dampened in the melted butter. The key is just to add a thin layer.

Yeah, wasnt sure if this was a joke or legit advice???

Anyway, I found a used belt assembly on ebay for $65, new is $124 so either way its not too bad. Looks like install will only require me to remove the seat bottoms and one panel on the pillar.

I have a similar issue. Please post updates with what you decide and process if you DIY. Subbed.

I remember my old e92 335 seat belt hander was not grabbing it properly. The issue was it was too 'supple', and they had to replace the whole belt.

I guess I put too much butter on it?
