Which Non Run Flat Tyres for E90 - POLL...

I'm still struggling with the E90's suspension so am going to change to non-RFTs but am not sure which one's to go for. My Daughter can't even sleep in the back of the car, even on the motorway, it's that bumpy - it's either new tyres or new car (after 8 weeks that'll be crippling financially!!).

So, which non-RFT's has everyone gone for, and how are you finding them?

Someone on here, can't remember who without checking (edit: it was 'coodem'), has got Falkens which seem extremely reasonable but how's about the Michelins/Bridgestones, etc???

I've got an M Sport on 18's.

Michelins are brilliant tyres - will cost more but they last longer, so you do get what you pay for

I changed to Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on my e92 335i (well rated in many tyre tests) - a very good tyre at a reasonable price.

Best tyres is a tricky thing, what do you want from it?? Ultimate grip or something more progressive so if the back does twitch slightly you have complete control?

I would say for best grip the Falken FK452 is as good as any out there and a bargain price.

For most progressive the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 is still so far ahead of the competition it is untrue.

I've recently gone from OEM Bridgestone Potenzas to Michelin Pilot Sports - both RFT's.

The Michelins are way better in terms of grip and tramline far less. Ride is better too, though still harsh. The car just feels more stuck to the road.

Non-RFT's Michelins must be even better still?

I have gone for Falkens 452s on the front of the car 19/35/235 (due to puncture) - and they seem to be great so far.
Loads of grip and less bumpy - even with the Bridgestone RFTs on the back.

Unless I get some nasty surprise with the Falkens, I will be putting the same on the back when the bridgestones are done.

New bridgestone = £260
New falken = £118

i did my rears on my 335D in 17K miles and replaced them with PS2 ZP (RFT) they are ok, but still not convinced. however i still have the original RFT Bridgestone’s on the front so really cant tell until i have changed the fronts to PS2 ZP.

on my Z4 3.0 i have PS2's (normal tyres) and they are unequivocally the best tyre in the world bar none.

in its 4 years and 37,000 miles it has had Bridgestone RFT RE050 6 tyres 2 sets of rears 1 front, i don't need to tell you how crap they were and how driving the Z4 hard down a back road was a dangerous thing to.

Then I changed to Pirelli P Zero Nero 1 full set. they lasted all of 6,000 miles (quite a few track days) these were night and day different to the RE050 RFT's good tyres, but the edge of the tyre was too soft (tread area abut 40mm from side wall to middle of tyre) on track it just scrubbed off. None the less a good tyre.

Finally i am on the PS2's. so far have had 2 1/2 full sets and they are awesome..... With out exception exceptional wet ability fantastic dry and not too bad on track as the edge of the tyre is well reinforced with less gaps between the tread blocks.

As my 335D is on a maintenance plan i am some what stuck with the RFT's.

Can’t wait to fit the front ZP's

I just changed mine yesterday from the run-flats to Michelin pilot sport ps2's, pretty noticeable how much smoother it gets.

jsut be gentle with them for a while before you lean on them hard!

I bottled it and stuck with RFTs. I went for the Michelin PS2 ZP as they are apparently the best of a bad bunch, and they are noticeably better in terms of ride quality and seem to be wearing well too.

Thanks for all your input, very interesting to hear everyone's views. My thoughts were leaning towards Michelins (before posting this thread i.e. from reading other threads) and it seems the general consensus reiterates this.

I'm really after comfort initially, closely followed by grip then lastly longevity.

I think I'll make the final decision when I look more closely at the cost comparison as the Falkens also seem to be strongly recommended. Whatever I go for it can't be worse than the Bridgestone RFT's I've currently got (and a damn site cheaper than a replacement car even though there's a stunning 645 locally for sale calling my name however that would not make sense!!!).

Does anyone know whether the 'space saver spare wheel' which is available for the 5 series would be suitable for the 3 series with 18s. Probably doesn't make financial sense when compared to some goo and a compressor!!!

...of those who have changed from RFT's to non-RFT's, has anyone advised their insurance company, if so, where they OK with the change and which insurer was it. I'm with Esure at present but haven't approached them yet (they wouldn't cover me if I chipped it so don't hold much hope).

No mention of Dunlops - which I have found no problems with so far. Didn't inform my insurance about non-rfts - only the wheels.

Not directly answering your question, but might be helpful even if only short-term...

I've found the RFTs INCREDIBLY sensitive to tyre pressure for comfort. as little as 0.1BAR out can make a big difference. On my 330d with 18" wheels I run the fronts just below the fully laden figures (can't remember what they are, I look each time on the door panel) - even though there is just me in the car most of the time. I run the rears about half-way between the two quoted figures.

Clearly this isn't going to turn the car into a Limo, but IMO it does help significantly.

Checked the tyre-pressure the other day so they are spot on the recommended. Couldn't tell if they were down or not before as it was one of those digital machines which I couldn't fathom out nor see the reading from the other side of the car!!! Made no difference if any air was added.

Priced up the tyres on Black Circles (for a guide) -: Falkens FK-452 = £391 Michelins PS (BMW) = £698.

For £400 I might give the Falkens a whirl to 'dip my toe' into the world of non-RFT (even though every single other car I've ever possessed had them (except the E92) with no bother!!!)
