Heys guys, I didn't see another OP about engine oil testing so I decided to make one. My X3 M40i just had its first service done at 8252 miles (it said one was needed) so I had them take a sample of my oil which is going to Blackstone Labs per the usual. I want to track my engines history as it ages and will post all of the results here.
Normally you get the results back In a few weeks so check back for updates. I drove my car rather normally with of course more spirited driving sessions when it was permitted. During the first 1000 miles I did not launch the car or anything crazy but I have done it a few times since then. I most drive in adaptive or comfort and occasionally sport/sport+ when there's no traffic or while merging onto the high. I would say my driving is 80/20 highway/city with apeeds normally between 75-85mph on the highway. This should give a little background when it comes to the results if sometime seems amiss. Let me know if you guys have any questions! update 2/7/2019 New oil results added. I drove the car very hard during this time, mostly in Sport+ hitting the redline you know how BMW intended. No issues with the sample which is a good sign! |

I did the same thing with my Audi SQ5 which turned out to be very useful after my dealer put the wrong engine oil in... I caught their mistake after 2500miles but the damage was already done. It showed the same wear/slightly more than during break in so I always like getting a baseline to compare it with.

I want to see the results as well. Thanks for posting.
Side note, mine just rolled to 9k miles, also said I am a quart low on oil. That seems weird to me. Dealer took care of it but still. |

Blackstone laba is really good and doesn't change a huge amount for running a sample. If you get the additives test I believe the total cost is ~$35 and they pay shipping and give you free sample containers with the postage. I can think of many things I've spent more on and gotten less from I'd you are skeptical. I'm an engineer so knowing the technical data (whether or not it matters) makes me happy. |

The 0w-20 in these vehicles is so thin I'd be worried about more than 8,500 miles. Also adding a liter during that kind of interval is completely normal.

Well, I finally got the results back today. There's nothing really out of place in my sample or TBN analysis which is good. I'll post a screenshot I took since I forgot to export the PDF as a JPG. I'll keep this OP updated and I welcome peoples thoughts/comments on the results. Please feel free to post your own reports if you get it done.
