n54 misfire on mhd stage 1+
someone please help or verify this, i went mhd stage 1+ about a week ago. and very first pull i did i got a misfire on cylinder 1. i switched the coils and spark plugs around and still have a misfire on cylinder 1! i flashed it back to stock and it ran completely fine. would this be bad injectors or a bad o ring? or even a leaky injector? someone please let me know

misfires can be very on and off depending on conditions. I would just replace all 6 coils and plugs for $150 through rock auto or something

I would start with new plugs and coils. From there you can continue to diagnose. Were you running appropriate fuel? Until you do more diagnosis it is hard to help point you in the right direction. Replace the spark plugs at least, then take a log and post it here.

It's not like you need to replace a bunch of components for the heck of it. In the N54 plugs and coils are wear items. With a tune you are going to be stressing every part of the engine more than stock, so it makes sense you replace wear items in preparation for the added stress. Sure, you don't have to do those maintenance items first, as the new tune will out worn components in short order. There's nothing more frustrating than getting all excited for a new tune and to have the car go into limp mode because it exposes a weak link. Sure, you can do it after the tune as needed, but you'll likely need to replace them soon anyway. This is why I bought plugs and coils from FCP Euro, since I can swap them for new ones.

They should always be replaced before adding a tune even if they were "good" before.

Let's say I can tune my car and not have any issues because my coils and sparks were in great condition. If I would have changed them before I would have literally wasted money as they were still ok. How is that ridiculous? Only a fool would think it is. Oh wait. |

Dude, that situation is completely out of context to what it is here. Here it it is over the top preventative maintenance. So if my car is running perfectly fine without any issues at all you would still replace all coils and spark plugs right away instead of waiting to see if it will still run ok with a tune? Do whatever you want, but don't go saying if you want to tune the car you have to change the plugs and coils before, because you don't. |

Your going to have to "waste" the money eventually so why not do it before any issues happen.

Ask around...how many people have changed their coils and plugs with MHD. I bet you would have a really hard time finding someone that hasn't

Always get new coils and 1 step colder plugs before running a tune. You may get away without coils but definitely need colder spark plugs gapped to 0.022. Once your tuned expect to change out the plugs every 15k to 20k miles.
6 new Delphi/Bosch coils from FCP with lifetime warranty $167 6 new NGK 95770 plugs $78 |

Tuning and maintenance is like the chicken and egg situation. Which comes first? Well if your car is running fine without issues, why not tune? But beware, tuning enhances your car's issues and often causes codes that may not appear without the tune.
There have been so many times my car has run seemly perfectly, without codes, only to install a tune and have codes appear immediately or soon afterwards. This isn't bad, it's actually helped to determine exactly what needs to be fixed/maintained (plugs, coils) and helped keep my car in top shape. I'm actually investigating a 30ff code that only appears when I use a specific map, even though it runs great on the stock map (no codes) and still runs great with the tune and the code. But until I can figure out how to fix the code, I drive on the stock map so it doesn't get triggered. |
