Map updates on 2019 X3?

I'm new to BMW. How does the 2019 X3 get map updates? OTA? From dealer? Self-install? And free or is there a cost? Asking about my X3, but curious about other BMWs as well. Also, what about traffic info etc? Is that subscription?

It’s region specific and over the air. The car will update once the vehicle receives the update. You can tell it is updating when you see a trifold map icon with a percentage indicator.

Is it free or subscription?

Has anyone in the US actually received an OTA update? The US ConnectedDrive website says that it's a renewable subscription -- one that appears alongside all of the other subscription services (BMW Assist, traffic info, etc.). However, I have no such map update subscription, and there's no option for me to purchase one.

I don’t know if the automatic download to the car updates work, certainly didn’t seem to on mine in the UK. I downloaded to usb following instructions on bmw uk website and it worked fine. Have now updated twice (car was out of date on delivery)

Over the air updates is the norm for cars with 4g LTE connections in the car for the U.S. market. I haven’t seen my x3 update maps yet but I have observed my 16 4 series do it at least once. You can go into BMW connected online and change your map region if you move or are going on a long trip.

I routinely drive in regions 9 and 10. Since you can only update your "home" region, should I toggle back and forth between these regions to get the latest updates of each?

Yep. But I wouldn’t plan on updating too often. I think they tend to do large batch updates one or twice a year, for my region anyway.

I wouldn't count on over the air updates. I purchased our X3 in early April and I have not seen any updates and the map still shows version 17-2.

Did you register your car with your BMW account online and set your region, etc?

Yes. Ours was an SC Performance Center Delivery. The CA helped to set all this up so there would not be any problems. Haven't been into the local dealer yet for my encore session, this and several other tech issues will be on the table for discussion.

Take your pick:
  • Updates are only yearly, if that. The car has been out for less than a year, and yearly updates are reasonable. Yeah, I'd love to have quarterly updates, but BMW is cheap. I wouldn't like it, but it wouldn't surprise me if the updates were only every 2-3 years.

  • Requires a ConnectedDrive "map update" subscription. While the website could just be out of date (quite possible), the US ConnectedDrive website does say that a subscription is required. (I don't have one, and the ConnectedDrive store doesn't allow me to buy one.)

  • Not working, busted.

I have the OTA Map updates in my F21, it did only 1 update this year so far but still the map is very outdated. One of our main highways had changed dramatically about 2 years ago but still isn't in the 'latest' OTA update. So don't expect to much from it. Also I got a message that my OTA map updates service will end per July 31st as only 3 years is included
