So annoyed with dealer break in service...

Original break in service was June 12.
Was made aware when picking up that rear diff fluid not available.
(I didn't read up on it on the forum)
Schedule another appt for June 28.
I had to reschedule, but confirmed with parts manager that fluid was in stock now and ready to go.
Reschedule for today.
Drop car off last night, and called today to follow up on progress, and was told rear diff fluid not available.

WWWWWWWWWWWWWW
TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind, I am the only '18 M5 on the road and in need of service in my region of this dealer.

Is there any other use for this fluid than M5 rear diff?
Or did they sell it to another dealer?

GAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

More wasted time!

Wow sorry to hear that. Didn't realize they still had supply issues. Just did my break in yesterday and they completed everything, had to double check the part number on the invoice to confirm the fluid being used.

Sterling BMW in CA has some. Tell your dealer to call them up and see if they'll overnight some (and make your dealer pay, and compensate you for wasting your time).

I had no issues with mine, but it seems like many dealers are having this issue.

I have the rear diff oil in my garage. Rochester is not far. let me know if you need it.

Mike
(I bought 4 quarts in NH when I was visiting family since my local dealer did not have it also, but by the time I was in for service they had the fluid.)

Took my car in today for the break in service. They call me around 2pm and say that one of their sources says the rear diff takes 1 liter, and another source says it takes 2. Not knowing which, and only having one bottle, they elected to delay the rear diff change to later this week after they can talk with someone at BMW to confirm.

Ok.... Then I drive off as the service department is closing down. As soon as I get on the interstate, I get horrible vibration through the steering wheel and the whole chassis. I immediately call the dealership and they say bring it back. Got a loaner and left the car for them to look at on Monday. Don't know what happened, but God I hope the front diff isn't destroyed.

The M5 PDF posted on this forum did list the amount of oil for the front differential, but did not mention the rear. The front requires 1 quart. My service slip says they used one quart in front and two quarts in the rear. Others have posted 2 and 4. So WHO KNOWS! LOL.

This uncertainty is terrifying. Incorrect/uncertain fluid quantity is a stupid f'ing problem to have. But, here we are.

Exactly, thus my pole post. I was trying to consolidate peoples experience with the first service. At least it was good that the BMW M5 PDF had the actual fluid volume for the front differential, too bad it did not include the rear.

I hate having to know more than the dealer about my car. That is how I keep my RS6 running strong for 15 years and a 145k miles. If I left it up to the dealer the thing would have been dead at 100k when the torque converter was not locking (first sign of transmission death by failed seals in the TC.) The car's diagnostic software leaves something to be desired and I suspect the same is true for BMW.s. The thing will trip a CEL under certain conditions and Failure to Lock the TC required so many failings in some many miles instead of perhaps maybe just maybe storing it internally so the dealer could pick up on scan. Especially with a problem known in the entire A6/A8 line since the 4.2 L V8 was first introduced, I.E. Bad Torque Converter.

This M5 uncertainty on the fluid volume is a bit of a concern BUT they told me the process of filling was more than just drain and refill with volume X, but the computer system had to be re-set and some kind of internal check made? Who knows.

If that last step of resetting the computer is true, I imagine there are a lot of us who will be driving around with variable volumes of fluid in the rear diff.

Turns out, they told me they simply applied the wrong lug bolt torque, causing the vibration. I think they probably air wrenched one bolt down at a time, way too tight, and the wheel never seated properly on the hub, hence the vibration. All is well now. Break in service done. Will post the invoice soon.

No excuse for that. They need the book "Lugnut Installation For Dummies "

It would appear that 1 unit is needed in the front, and 2 in the rear. I don't know if the units are quarts or liters.
