Wheeew! The payments posted so far included some hefty down payments. I thought that wasn't such a good idea on a lease?

Wrong. BMW financial has gap insurance included.

Do some research first before making assumptions....

I think regardless......those who put that much down are paying several hundred more than they should be.

I also pay about $970/month (taxes included) on a M550i....and that's on a 24 month lease. This car should not be more than that on a 36 month lease.

Yes GAP is included, but GAP only covers the gap between what is owned on the contract and what you get from insurance (assuming the car is a total loss or stolen).

Let’s take my 330e lease for example which I put nothing down. Currently the residual is about $35,000. I have around $5,000 remaining to pay. So the total remaining is around $40,000. If I look on Autotrader, 330e’s in similar condition to mine are listed for around $30,000. I’d say it’s safe to assume the insurance company would give me a market value of less than what I own, let’s say for example $25,000. So now there is a gap of $15,000. GAP will kick in and cover it. If I had made a down payment of say $5000, then the GAP would only be $10,000* but I still don’t get any of my down payment back. I just paid the depreciation early.

It’s not a down payment, it’s a prepayment.

*This is simplified. The down payment would apply across the 36 payments so at this point I’d still owe around $4500 but my payment would have been $139 less over the lease term.

Close to a second faster 0-60. The engine has been dyno'ed at 540HP and has significantly more torque, even at the usually conservative manufacturers numbers. The 540 is however more nimble and likely feels as fast, but any seat of the pants feel will verify that a 3.8 second blast for a car this big is impressive (and nearly as fast as the previous M5).

Just bought a 2018 540i M package. Original MSRP was $73,200. Paid $62,400 with discount, rebate and BMW loyalty program. Plus they forgave the last payment on my previous lease. Put ~$5k down. Payment is $581 which includes 9.25% tax in tax happy California.

A lot of research has been done in the past. Gap will not cover and return your down payment.

I tried to plug in your numbers and not getting $980/mo , the final sale price is $84.560 after all rebates ? in the $3500 how much of it is actually going to the cap cost reduction ?
I have a quote for m550i
msrp $80,500
price 73,000
out of pocket $2,700
$920/mo
should monthly be lower ? Any advice how much percent off msrp to shoot for ? Thanks

In what scenario do you get your cap cost reduction returned? If you have the car a year, it depreciates and if you wreck it and are upside down. The GAP is covered to get you whole as it relates to what you owe. We aren’t talking about MSD’s here. BMW doesn’t offer those anymore...

Please explain the research you mention...

That was the selling price before the incentives were applied so in reality it ended up being close to $10k off MSRP and that's how my monthly got so low.

I've called around also and no dealers been budging on discounting this car but I worked with a great sales guy and dealership in SoCal.
PM me for me the details.

None, you paid the depreciation up front. Or, said another way, a bit of each payment was paid up front, thus lowering each monthly payment. If there was equity in the car (I.e. the insurance payout is more than what is owed on the contract) then you might get some money back, but it’s unlikely.
