50 miles during airbag service
The miles in and out when I got my airbag recall done is about 50 miles different. Now I'm left here wondering what they did with my car. Do I have a right to be upset?

1. Did you ask for the service manager and request an explanation?
--- If yes ... why are you posting about it? --- If no... why didn't you? 2. Be upset. PS they probably loaded it full of dirty service guys, drove to the local bar and strip joint, got wasted and drove your car back. |

Dude - you dropped the 'iS' off w/o explicitly telling them not to drive it? YIKES! I'm so sorry for your future issues which will be requiring you for a return visit. Good chance they went WOT on cold oil etc. all the stupid shit. I just had my dealer do an alignment and I told them they aren't allowed to drive it even to check their own work, not allowed to wash it etc etc. They did the airbag recall for me to, I asked if they disconnected the battery - nope. Hooked up to the charger, 'ok cool if I have a FRM module issue in the future its on the house then'
I'd go straight to BMW NA, and any reasonable future issue that comes up I'd be holding them responsible... even if you can't win that one. Edit: OP you NEED to call you SA back TODAY and let him know you are far from happy. Ask him to note this on your service records for this visit.

That is massively excessive, not to mention brazen.
Side note: as a former BMW dealership employee (not a tech mind you...), I can say that if shit like that did ever happen where I worked, it was absolutely the exception and not the norm. I think the notion that all the techs are joyriding customer cars is largely unfounded, but this sounds like exactly what happened in your case. 100% on principle alone I would be in touch with that service manager now. If they're a modern dealership, the key boxes should log who has taken your keys out. If it was ~10 miles, even though I still think that's excessive to 'test' an airbag recall, it would be more pain than its worth to pursue. But 50? Come on... |

The key boxes we had did not log mileage, but any time a customer would drop a car off for service, the SA would perform a key read which would log mileage. On our work orders, there was also a ‘mileage in’ and ‘mileage out’ field. Not sure if your invoice has this. Frankly one would have to think a respectable service manager would give a client in your situation the benefit of the doubt. What would you really have to gain by fabricating this story, unless you were seeking some sort of unreasonable compensation. I really don’t know what would be fair. You didn’t mention asking for anything, nor do I think it’s really the correct way to go, but demanding a detailed and truthful explanation as to what the fuck happened is absolutely fair here. |

Since the mileage at end of your last trip is stored (and then read) from your key, the likelihood of this being wrong is practically nil. But that’s assuming they got the mileage from the key, which they should of. If you self-reported, which it doesn’t sound like you did, then it would be different

It shouldn’t matter. I could be wrong and I’m sure there are times when the end-of-trip write is not correct, but I know many people with CA who never put their keys in the slot. Their key reads would still be up to date.
Who knows though! |

Yeah it cant be the slot else every time Ive been in it would have been WAY off. The only people who have ever put the key in the slot are valets.

This exact scenario happened to me during my airbag recall. I wish I took a picture of my odometer first. Their explanation was that comfort access keys update the mileage less frequently, and may not always be up to date when they read it from the key. It was a 50 mile difference.

When I was with bimmer, 100% we would drive cars that we took in on trade, but that's because they were OUR inventory at that point, and because it was of benefit to us and our clients to know the vehicles we were selling, especially the off-make stuff. And even then, if only for the sake of optics, we wouldn't key-toss a trade we just took in to another sales rep while the client was still there. I do realize that culture and permissiveness depend heavily on management. In our case, we had pretty good management on the service side who wouldn't have condoned gratuitous test drives of service clients' cars. But I'm sure the clients at some dealerships aren't so lucky. |

Next day I called the shop owner but he vehemently denied it; I told him I'd drop by in the afternoon with the footage. When I got there his tone had totally change, he said he had talked to the tech again and tech, finding out he was recorded, admitted. Owner looked genuinely shaken up and upset so I went easy on him but I never went back there again. |
