Unhappy Cracked winshield in less than 3 weeks

Noticed a crack coming out the left side of my rear view mirror this afternoon. Upon close inspection it turns out it goes across behind the rear view mirror (just missing one of the lower sensors) and then up along the right side (if looking from within the car) of the rear view mirror to the top of the windshield.

Tough to get a good photo - especially when it's pouring rain.

1500KM into ownership, is this just bad luck? Is it odd that the crack comes from the very edge of the windshield or is that normal? In my 18 years of driving, i've been pretty lucky getting some rock chips, but never a cracked windshield (let alone on a new vehicle).

Some others have also had to replace their windshields for various reasons, unfortunately. Here is a link to that thread: http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1490550

Thanks, i have read that thread and based on that probably shoulda opted for the better glass coverage insurance that had a $50 deductible instead of my $500 deductible. Either way, I guess i was just curious if it was normal for a crack to originate at the edge of a windshield?

I feel your pain!

I had a windshield crack a few weeks after taking delivery on my 2002 Acura.

On the advice of the local Acura dealer service manager, I got the identical windshield, but without the Acura imprint, from a local auto glass repairer. It cost ~300 IIRC. So below the deductable but not a huge amount of money.

That replacement still looks great today.

So hopefully your experience will be similar to mine.... A bit frustrating, but it will all work out in the long term.

I picked up a chip at the driver’s side edge of the windshield and within a minute it had spread across my line of vision. Three week old car as well.

Some people say that BMW has "soft" glass, I don't know, I have heard the same on Audi and Merc forums.

I say it's just bad luck. I seem to get behind an oilfield truck each day and get peppered with rocks and mines still fine. My last Audi made it about 2 months before it got a windshield crack. Neither of my last 2 Mercs ever had a crack.
