I have a Black Sapphire X3 M40i and I'm looking at doing something better than my monthly wax. Thought about paying for a professional ceramic coating but want to explore doing something myself first, that isn't too difficult to pull off.

Yikes. Why are you waxing every month? I've had three Jet Black BMWs and now a BSM M3 and a DGM X3. I'm using OPT Poli-Seal which is an all in one product at least twice per year and then their spray was at least twice per year so I'm treating the car quarterly. The M3 is almost four years old and looks great. The X3 just has one coat of spray wax on it. If there is environmental damage I use a clay bar. And then spray wax to protect. I've never felt the need to home apply a ceramic coating or professionally have one applied but considered a glass coating on the X3.

I used Car Pro Cquartz on both the X3 (Carbon Black) and 428 (Mineral White). There is a lot of prep work, but once you're done it's good for a couple years. Future washings are much easier and the paint always looks like it has a fresh wax. Autogeek has a huge selection of product and excellent description for the advantages of ceramic coating, with detailed instructions. https://www.autogeek.net/car-paint-g...-coatings.html
