False Positive Emergency Braking on Backing Up?

I was backing out of a random driveway this afternoon when the car slammed on the brakes to a halt (as if something were in the way) but nothing was there.

I got out of the car, looked around, tried again, same thing. I then backed up at a slightly different angle, and I was successful.

I've since disabled this feature in the settings.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Was it by chance a driveway on a slope? Mine did this once but it was because of the slope and once it reached the flush part of the road, it perceived the road as a danger.

Well, it was barely a slope. I wouldn't call it a slope...

The driveway was concrete, and the road was pavement.

I'm wondering if it can detect color changes in the road surfaces? Hmm.

That’s an interesting idea.

7 months of driving our X3 M40i now and this hasn't happened to us, despite some pretty steep grades which then level out. Wonder if speed plays a role with the sensors' algorithms judging whether to brake or not (we back up very slowly as habit with a number of small children in the neighborhoods over the years)?

I've had a couple of incidents where I'm either backing down a driveway or driving straight out (as from a gas station) and the alarms go off. Haven't had the brakes (automatically) slam on yet, though.

Scares the s**t out of me because in my old car, which sat very low and from which I couldn't see out of very well, I missed the curb cut a couple of times and damaged the car's bumper. So when I heard the alarms this time I went ballistic, slammed on the brakes and ran out of the car to see what happened. Fortunately nothing but it took a while to convince wifey that it wasn't my fault, I can actually see out of the X3.

Happens to me whenever I back out of a moderately sloped driveway too quickly (and by too quickly, I mean at a pretty moderate speed). If I go super slow, it doesn't happen. Given that the rear cross traffic alert has helped me before, I can live with this, but it's really something that should be fixed by BMW.

I posted a thread on this before, and it seemed like lots of other folks have also had this issue.

Yes, this exactly for me. If I go slowly, then it's not a problem, but if I go too quickly, it can occasionally slam on the brakes for me at the bottom of my driveway. Since there are a ton of kids in my neighborhood, I still leave it on to be safe and just take my time backing out.

Same here... I've now learned that I need to leave my driveway at an angle to prevent this from happening. Really not a slope at all ...level across a sidewalk and a driveway apron to the road.

Its very scary.

Similar but when parking, not a slope.

I was backing in close to a convex curving kerb - along a tight road people park near train station so you don't want to be hanging out once others park.

I was being super careful, passenger side mirror dipped down and gave me visibility etc. All of a sudden ***KKEEERRR-UUNNNCCCHHHH*** and sudden stop.

I honestly sat for 30 seconds thinking about how I'd admit to my wife that it was me putting the a massive gouge on our otherwise pristine alloys.

Then I got out....hmmm...nothing. Was it the front? No. Side? No....

I tried again and same thing happened - emergency braking kicked in. As far as I can tell, it was a leafy branch on a bush hanging out. I had to turn off the parking sensors to actually complete the park. Fair enough I guess.

Yes, it's happened to my husband a few times. It's not happened to me, until it the one time my husband was backing out on a flat surface with me in the car, and it auto-braked.

Definitely some room for improvement, and for a software upgrade.

Happened twice backing out of my garage. Slight slope to the driveway. I thought I hit something.

Yup, here too. We have a very lightly sloped driveway. The first time it slammed on the brakes it scared me . Thought I was about to run over one of the neighborhood dog walkers. To be honest, the front and rear side collision warning systems are very disappointing in how they work (don't work). Especially given the fact that BMW is charging extra for these 'options'. BMW - if you're listening, let's have a software upgrade please.

This is not related to the front collision detection/braking which has been working very well (has not experience side collision detection yet). Why aren't you happy with the front collision detection system?

Happens to me on our moderate slope driveway with a passenger in the car. Took a bit to understand what was happening.

Maybe you should all and stop complaining about things that are working as they were designed. Itīs written there, that system (and every safety system in the car) has itīs limitation. A program, no matter how sophisticated, can never replace a human being. Have some patience and tolerance with it.

This doesn't apply when the system fails within itīs specs. Just like it was posted, that it slammed the brakes on a flat surface. Thatīs certainly not a desirable behavior.
