M40i Engine Oil Recommendation After 1200 Mile Break-in?
Anyone hit their break-in period yet on the M40i?
If so: A) Did you change your oil right away? If so, what oil are you using and why? B) Are you planning on following BMW's (1 year) recommendation? |

+1 for this thread. I have it seen both ways where people have changed the oil and others have not. I personally would like to change it around 1500 miles and then normal schedule after but would like to hear from experts on the forum.

Does the M40i have an official break in service like the M cars? If so just do it at or before 1200. There are stories of BMW denying warranty claims on M cars that didn't get break in service on time. I just follow the condition based service advisory on the car. Most who plan to keep long term change oil more often.

These cars and the engineers behind them are smart. The computer knows how you drive the car and will tell you when you need to change the oil. It will keep you in warranty.

I never understood people who sat there and said " You know, I know the folks at BMW went to school for several years, got this job because they were near the top of their class, maybe even have years of experience on the field. But I know better than they do!"

Thanks for the recommendation, but where do you see this referenced for the G01 exactly?

I bought the oil and filter from my BMW dealer.

Filter cap is 32mm (a 1.25" socket is close enough) — I would recommend a low profile socket for the filter cap removal ... it's a tight fit ... not sure you can get a standard or deep well socket on the filter cap without interference from the engine block. My manual shows 6.5 L (or 6.9 quarts). I filled it within a smidge of 6.5 L and did an electronic oil level measurement, and the level checked out perfect.

The entire idea of more frequent oil changes extending engine life is a concept from the 1950’s. It actually was a necessity to do this and it did work well into the 1980’s.
Around mid 1985 very significant advancements in lubrication technology were made. It has grown exponentially since that time. Oils today are so advanced and the engines they lubricate are smarter. Even oil manufacturers are recommending extended service intervals. It’s 10000 miles today soon it will be 15000 then 20000, etc. It’s a complete waste of money to do it more frequently than mfg recommended unless your driving is so extreme and let’s face it most of our cars are family vehicles not track performance machines. The benefit of more frequent oil changes is essentially insignificant. |

Interesting. When I look up Castrol Edge (European) online or talk to the local auto parts stores, they confirm that it doesn't have the LL14 FE+ standard.
But if I go here, this data sheet says it does: https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/F...PXE-A376WG.pdf Not sure what to believe. I'm actually going to stick with BMW 0w30 Twin Power Synthetic for now. |

I trust the factory recommended service intervals. The synthetic oils are great. I just traded in my Audi SQ5 for X3 M40i (will arrive sometimes in August), and the SQ5 has 67K ran like a gem, never burnt oil and I just kept the factory recommended services.
