How to CLOSE the tailgate from driver's seat

I sure hope I'm missing something, but is there any way to close the tailgate while sitting in the driver's seat of the X3?

It's just loony to have to unbuckle, exit, and go push the button on the back to close it.

There’s a button which opens and closes the tailgate. It’s the furthermost button on the drivers door arm-rest, in front of the one that adjusts the mirrors.

A push down on the button opens it and a pull up closes it. I like to think of this design as being the same functionality as the similarly shaped window buttons. Push down to open, pull up to close.

If you want an X3 where it opens from inside, but you must go outside to close it, that would be the F25. So thankful they added a close button.

No coding required. I use multiple times daily for people to take/put stuff in the back and I do all the opening and closing with the door switch as described above.

I'm also conscious that it's "the other way around" from how my brain thinks it should work but I like the explanation that it's "like opening a window"

Yall are all to active. I tell Alexa to open and close mine just as I do with everything in my house.

Best Control sequence I had in my house was the skill of saying "Alexa, I am going to work"

She would turn off porch and patio lights, turn off ceiling fans, turn off all lights inside the house except certain lights I keep on during the day, turn off the TV and stereo, start the vacuum, open my garage door and start my AMG.

All I can do with my M40 is lock/unlock or honk the damn horn...lol...

You know that is a good way to look at it. It is the same functionality as opening and closing the windows. Good way to put it.

Good info! I missed the "pull AND HOLD" part on that button, or maybe didn't have it in park. I also did search the manual for Tailgate, and it found only the remote-control button (which is apparently open-only, never close).

Going to go mess with it. Thanks!

Am I wrong, but for some reason, I think that the first version of the F25 was like this because I remember my 2012 F25 and having it coded where I was able to close the tailgate from my fob - but I could not from the control in the car. Then with my 2015 LCI F25 - I think I recall being able to close the tailgate with the car control (but I never had it coded for the fob).

But yes, I agree - I am thankful that you can close it in the car too!

No, the remote can open and close.

I was sure I'd done it but just went to my (worlds smallest) garage now and opened then closed the boot without touching car. Just like the internal door button, you must hold it down to close.

Worked great from the door button, although you have to hold it up for the entire duration or it reverses and goes back up.

I was unable to do it from the fob after several tries, all it did was click each time I would press and hold on the tailgate button, and no luck when holding down the lock (BMW roundel) button. I had opened it with the door button, maybe it has to be opened with the fob to close with the fob?

Good thread - learned something new.

Agree with Keweenawbee after just trying these. The door button works great to open and close, and the engine wasn't even on. But the FOB only opens it - despite multiple attempts it does not close it (you can hear what I guess is the internal release click once each time you hold the button down to attempt to close but it remains open).

In the US you need it to be coded to close the boot with the fob. It won't come that way from the factory. Very annoying.

I just tested by unlocking the car, using the door control to OPEN the tailgate then used the key fob to close the tailgate.

That worked. If it really isn't working for others in the US, perhaps it is a coding thing as others suggesting. But it works in AU which at least means the car technically supports it.

This is what I had coded also.

Same thing for Canadian builds. Just gave it a try and can't close with the fob

The fob really should come programmed to open AND close the trunk. Just took delivery of 2022 US and it does not. Love the vehicle though. Absolutely love this SUV. I’ll get it programmed by dealer as a favor or will purchase BimmerCode.

Dealer won't be able to activate that function. Only aftermarket coding

2022 is just a few days old. At the moment (can’t make guarantees about future) - I just want to ADD the “close trunk with key fob” function. I’ve read about Bimercode and ESYS and already have a port cable for e90 and sssume it’s same for G01. Which method is easiest to add this function? Also, Do I need to do both keys separately or will the head unit coding apply to both keys?

With BimmerCode, it looks like costs are $59 for OBD Adapter and the app is free? Or the app downloads for free but you have to purchase the paid version of app to code? Sorry for amateur questions here. New to coding.
