Speed limit info display and set speedometer warning feature

I searched the forum for this topic and scanned Max’s G01 wish list for a bit, but I apologize if this has already been discussed.........

The ideal driver setable speed warning system:

Since the forward facing cameras in our DA/DA+ systems are capable of displaying the current speed limit sign and creating that impressive little band of red in the gradient indicating our overage, why can’t we set our audible/visual speed warning alert to an amount over the limit, rather than just a single speedometer reading that trips it?

It is so easy to speed in this car (one of my wife’s first comments).

but you know, there is button to set a speed limit on your wheel? but I agree, a audible alert would be nice.

We all have the audible alert option present but it is only for one specific speed at a time. I had it in the 80's and 90's on our 5 series sedans if I recall. Our Tiguan had it too. It is too much of a nuisance to keep bothering with.

What I am after is something in suburban areas where the speed limit changes so often, why not take advantage of the tech that is already there, except for some coding, and give an audible alert when we go over the posted limit by a driver selectable margin?

It's definitely a much older technology feature than whats in the DA packages. I have turned it off on every BMW i've owned, and in fact several loaners as well.

The posted speed limit signs are from stored gps info, not cameras picking up the signs.

This is not my experience. My 2016 BMW X3 camera reads the posted speed limit signs and displays the speed limit in the HUD display. As one example, it has displayed temporary speed limit signs in construction zones that would not be stored. If no sign is seen for some period of time the system display will revert to speed limit information stored with navigation information. I believe the speed information display operates in the same manner in the 2018 X3.

I had very much come to believe the car must be able to read signs based on its accuracy around recent changes and roadworks.

Unless of course there is a master database that is frequently updated both by the authorities and BMW.

Eitherway, per the OP, the car seems to know the speed limits with some accuracy and I had also wondered why we can’t have an automatic speed limit warning based on that. As it stands, I use the “limit assistance” but it’s many many button presses and fiddling per trip that I’d be safer not making.

I can confirm that it reads the signs. I park in an underground parkade. When the car is first turned on, it shows no speed limit info. But when I pass the first 10km/h sign, the display picks it up immediately

I have a street near my house that the speed limit recently was changed from 25 mph to 35 mph. The speed limit readout will read 25 for the whole street before and after I pass the 35 mph sign.

Yeah it's pretty uncanny, it does read the signs. I would like to think it is a feedback loop system backed up by GPS coordinates, but it even reads the temporary road work area signs. Hopefully a smart "speed-over-the limit" warning will be forthcoming. (that would be cool).

If your comment refers to a 2012 X3 listed in your profile, any speed limit information available in the US for the 2012 F25 X3 appears to be different than the camera based system in more recent X3 models. As this forum relates to the G01 X3, your experience with a 2012 X3 may not be the best source of information.

It does read the signs, same as my current 435d does. And the DA package description also includes "no entry sign detection", so signs are definitely being read.

Thanks, I do have a 2018 X3 M40i (since updated). Some streets have no speed limit signs yet the display still reads the correct speed limit. As mentioned by Keeweenawbee, the system must use a combination of GPS and cameras.

It seems to use both. It thinks my development is 25 from the gps but the "real" speed limit based on signage is 15 it changes right as I pass the sign. When I leave my house there is no signs and it thinks it is 25.

I appreciate your clarification that the speed limit info in your X3 M40i appears to use a combination of GPS and camera, as suggested by several others posting in this thread.

To avoid confusion by others that may not read the entire thread, it may be helpful to edit your #5 post which as of now states unequivocally that:
"The posted speed limit signs are from stored gps info, not cameras picking up the signs."
One person already appreciated your #5 post, which may only add to the credibility of what appears to be inaccurate information.

Like others have said, the system uses both a database and a camera reading the signs. I had this in my 2015 F25 as well and it works really well. It even reads the 5mph sign in my local mall indoor shopping center parking lot. LOL

Anyway, your speed also turns red in the HUD when you've exceeded the speed limit, so you have that.

Thats a great feature request! Something that you can set as "warn me if I am over xx% of posted speed limit" and let car warn you as the windshield camera reads the road signs as you drive. Its so intuitive now that you said it! I hope a future update has that.

BTW does BMW offer a forum for owners to post such requests or do they, like most major manufacturers, shun any actual customer requests lest they be sued for theft of intellectual property?

Adding to what most of us are saying, on my way home from school run today, there is a 40 k/h section passing another school. I had sort of noticed that the car didn't return to 60 afterwards until much later. Today I see why:

The sign 'ending' the school zone has been hit by something and is facing away from the road 45 degrees. I can read it but clearly the car can't. The car then corrects this about 500m later when there is a regular 60 k/h sign.

Good Point.

Seems like it is always red though. I need an annoying sound and yellow triangle on the dash for real discipline. Plus....it seems like I mostly drive it during the daytime and mostly have the HUD off since I am wearing my polarized sunglasses. I love the HUD, but not enough to go without the glasses. Another request would be to enhance what transfers to the tach display side when the HUD is off. Apparently only the NAV functions transfer. Again, some more coding would do the trick.

I hear that. I confess that I even with the color change in the HUD, that I don't notice it as much. I think because it's often in the red to begin with and I barely notice it. It is indeed hard to know when you are speeding oftentimes. Just this weekend, I wanted to over take some traffic and while I knew that I pushed on the pedal hard - I didn't realize that I hit 105mph so quickly as I was concentrating on the road and wasn't focused on the HUD. My alert is at 68mph so that chime was long gone since everyone was cruising at around 70-75.

First time my car went over 100mph and it wasn't intentional. lol

Back in 2014 I began the 'Wish List for the G01' specifically with this intent, smovva - to provide us (as Enthusiasts of the X3) a chance to record features we thought might enhance the X3 experience. Although I do not know for sure, it seems possbile BMW's Design and Engineering teams took note of at least some of the 93 Wishlist items which many of our Forum Members' kindly contributed. What better way for BMW to hear, in an informal setting, from the very folks who own or wish to purchase an X3? Suspect they also have formal focus groups, Dealer requests, surveys and the like as well, but Forums such as this would also seem to be a free and anonymous method for Mnfrs to gather ideas which, in the end, will benefit us when ideas are implemented. A win-win for all.
