Drive train fault

So I've had the drive train fault pop up a few times ,

Asked my Indy garage when it was in for a mot to check for code faults,
to which their response was there had been a few so they cleared them and that they think they are related to the cold weather,
what ever that means !!

My car originally went into limp mode when it first happened.
Other signs are when ticking over it's lumpy now & again.

Today at around 50mph it chugged in power about twice like a blockage, to which I reduced speed and the drive chain fault popped up ,
Pulled over / turned car on & off and then went on my way as usual.

Cleaned my egr valve once home .

Anyone else had this fault as I've read stories it could be a number of things ...

That style of EGR valve sticks on the cam behind the plastic casing.Cleaning the carbon off will do nothing unfortunately.Remove the plastic cover and move the mechanism back and forth to see if it sticks. If so,grease it and re-assess.

KM79 can you please elaborate which cam behind the plastic casing you referring? The EGR valve has engine coolant hoses attached - so looks like that to remove the complete EGR assembly (including the heat exchanger), the coolant lines have to come off - unfortunately there is no one decent DIY on EGR for N57Z engines which explain the complete DIY (cleaning or replacing) - would really help if you can explain your experience bit further. thanks in advance.

Hello there, the plastic cover on the egr valve pops off to reveal the cam assembly inside. It does not require valve removal and takes all of 30 secs.
If any members would like a step by step of egr removal or egr cooler removal I can throw something together.

I for one would defiantly appreciate a right up please if you wouldn't mind.
As you stated before cleaning the carbon off wouldn't improve anything.

Thanks

@KM79, it would be a great help to a detailed DIY guide (cleaning and replacement) preferably with photos - quite a common issue with diesels so would help many people. Few weeks ago, I kind of made an attempt to clean the egr - got up to the point of removing it same as photos in the thread and thats about it really! Would be good to know what to remove and how to clean it properly or worst case complete replacement.

Did as you stated, the cam does moves freely up & down.
It does stick a little, if its pushed all the way open for instance but I'm sure maybe it doesn't open completely so no need for concern ( I could be wrong )
If need be is it the rod or the arm that needs grease ?
Thanks

Bertz,if it sticks in any way that’s the issue. You need to grease the track the roller runs in.Push the cam all the way to each end stop and make sure it returns properly.

Bertz Hey Bertz, can you please explain how did you remove the black cover? Did you remove the valve first and than removed the cover, or you removed it in-situ? Was it easy to remove? from photos it looking quite clean - not clogged up!

As KM79 said it's straight forward.
I did mine in-situ,
removed the bracket above it via the screw,

then I un-clipped the hose followed by the black plastic cap.

Plastic cap was Slightly tricky but just needs a flat screw driver down the side of the clip to push it outwards then pull cap upwards. Job done

Going to grease mine once I get some so if you need a short vid as I do the above just let me know .

Thanks KM79 once again for the help .
