1/4 Mile Dinan Stage 1 Update

For those of you who are not interested in drag racing - this post will be boring.

I ran the M240 under 3 different track conditions and temps and the results are both positive and negative:

I will scan one of the time slips and post just for the record

Good news the additional HP shows up consistently as indicated by the average of 112 Trap speed - stock it was 107 to 108

Bad New - Something in the tune is causing significant lag on launch -It literally just sits for about 1/10 or so-- I cannot tell you many different RPMs, various settings etc I tried and the results were the same - I only get barely below 2.0 60ft once out of 9 launches and for drag racing that sucks as that is where it counts - I know it is the tune because I have a friend with a stock M240 X drive like mine and he let me test on the same track etc and I got a 1.87 and a 1.92 with same settings, same tires - hence I will be in touch with Dinan on Monday and go from there. IMO it must be a torque management issue

Here are the numbers for one of the runs

60ft 2.062 1/8 ET 8.03 MPH 90.09
1/4 ET 12.41 MPH 112.2
Simply getting the 60ft to 1.9 would have the car at 12 flat or better and will X drive there is no reason not to expect a 1.8 which now make it a 11 sec 1/4 car

PS; I did kick a Audi S6 butt lol

Nice! Thanks for the update. Hope your issue with the Dinan tune gets resolved. 1/4 mile at 12.4 is pretty quick! Any chance you have any 0-60 MPH times?

Yeah, I'd expect closer to 12 flat with X-Drive. My RWD with Jb4/intake runs 12.3-12.4 with sixties in the 1.90's. You should be able to get into the 1.70's. I don't know why the 340i's seem stronger. Several guys on N54tech running 12 flat on a JB4/intake/DP at a solid 115-116. And these are RWD cars too. The 340i has what, a good 125 lbs on us?

My DP should be here today!

As posted this car with Dinan Stage one, if they fix the torque management, will be high 11 with ease with just a tune. The numbers do not lie

Will let folks know what Dinan says about torque management - not holding my breath but it is the wife's car and she dial in bracket races so not that important

IMO Drag Racing with all wheel drive and automatic is like watching grass grow

Give me RWD Drive , a 6 speed, a John Force burnout and a slippery track where going A to B is a challenge -

This engine has so much potential untapped
That’s amazing. Meth and the “some day” flash tune will put the X-Drive in the upper 10’s.

There has to be more ie E85 etc In order to have a ET of 11.5 and a MPH of 115 - with a estimated weight of car and driver of 3500 lbs (probably low estimate ) you would need over 430HP at the flywheel which equals about 380 at the wheels - You can check any 1/4 HP calculator on line- they are not exact but we have found them to be ballpark.

Great that you posed that proves my point exactly about 60ft - If I could have got that 60ft I would have run 11.7 of course with a lower TRAP mph - that is why I feel Dinan has messed up the torque management system with their tune Thanks for posting!!

Time will tell!

E85 does nothing for this platform. 115 trap is attainable with those mods (although I just noticed he's not fully catless; has a 200 cell cat; even more impressive!). Like I posted before, there are several 340i's trapping ~115 over on n54tech, with just piggyback, intake, DP. This platform seems very inconsistent from car to car. I think it's mostly due to throttle closures. I lose a TON of forward momentum on WOT shifts. And of course, there will always be "fast" tracks and "slow" tracks. But regardless, an 11.5 is attainable with X-Drive on a 115 trap with a strong launch.

No saying it cannot be done but it had to be a great 60ft with a trap of 115 - In my 2000 Camara SS (410 hp to the wheels) At mid 11 I consistently trap between 118 and 120 with a 60FT of about 1.70 - but the above post is right different track conditions, etc etc so the only way to really compare is same track same night same driver - I would love to see the wife get to 11.5 in her car - would not be able to wipe the small off her face!!

Had a great talk today with Dinan Engineering - I will be working with them and my Local BMW dealer, who is a dinan dealer also to see if we can figure out why the tune appears to have a torque managment issue on launch
- The Dinan engineer did come up with a possible cause but will need some testing which I agreed to do. Unfortunately we are not able to data log yet which will make it more difficult but still doable.
On another quick note - do not expect a CAI in the new future due to the move etc.

Just a quick note - I had a problem with the first Dinan Stage 1 - no CEL just was not working right on launch - Dinan worked with me and I had a new tuner installed yesterday - Track last night and very pleased - 3 runs-- 60 Ft with a 1.83 avg ET 12.2 or better - with low ET of 12.17 -and trap at 110 to 111. These were all done on launch control so I could compare runs from the old tuner. I will post time slips this weekend as I may run again friday.
I am sure with brake boosting at a higher RPM will get the 60FT around 1.7 which should put me in the high 11.
Nice work Dinan - now if you could just get the CAI done.

So are the updates Dinan gave you meant for everyone or was it specifically for you?

I have throttle lag on my Dinan Stage 1 that annoys me. Its most noticeable in comfort mode. In Sport+ its practically gone.

I think I just had a bad tuner - I do not believe they changed anything except the hardware - I very seldom drive in comfort unless on a road trip -

Nice! DP and intake and you should easily get into the 11's. I need to put my ER pipe on soon.
