Hairdryer smell from the defroster

With the storm yesterday, I used the windshield defroster for the first time and it smelled like mild burning, like a hair dryer. Is something burning or is it just because the car is new (3500 miles)? Anyone else report this?

My 60k mile 2013 still has this smell when I turn the heat all the way up.
